Disk full error but USB drive has plenty of free space

I'm trying to copy a file to a USB flash drive, although the drive is empty when I try to copy the file I get an error message telling me the drive is full.  The file is 8GB and the drive is 32GB so there is plenty of room.  How do you fix this?
Answer
Answer
Most USB flash drives are formatted with the FAT32 file system.  This file system cannot store any single file bigger than 4 GByte. You will need to reformat the flash drive to NTFS in order to store a 8 GByte file.  (Caution:  Save all files on drive before reformatting).
