Windows 7 - Can't install updates (Windows Installer MSI failed)

Thinking I have a Windows Installer issue, how can the installer be rebuilt. Also unable to uninstall any application. Get an MSI Failed error.

Code 1 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Unable to install any Windows Updates, always get the failure above. Also issues as stated above with unable to uninstall any installed application. Is there a way to clear the Windows Update cache and force it to rebuild?

Thanks

Jeff

System:
DELL Studio 1746, CPU: i7, 8GB RAM

Would Windows 7 SP1 fix these issues? When is it due out?

Answer
To repair Windows Installer run the System File Checker with these steps:
  1. Click the Start orb and then type cmd in the Search programs and files field.
  2. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.
  3. At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

The scan may take some time, so be patient. Windows will repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds. If information from the installation CD is needed to repair the problem, you may be prompted to insert your Windows Vista or Windows 7 CD.

Hi SaintFlyer,

In addition to MowGreen’s suggestions

Step 1: Run Windows Update troubleshooter and check

Open the windows Update troubleshooter

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

Step 2: Unregister and then reregister Windows Installer

1. Unregister Windows Installer. To do this, click Start, type run, click Run, type msiexec /unregisterin the Open box, and then click OK.

2. Reregister Windows Installer. To do this, click Start, type run, click Run, type msiexec /regserver in the Open box, and then click OK.

The Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) beta is now available to download. SP1 Release-to-Manufacturing (RTM) will be available in the first half of calendar year 2011
