windows 8 wifi without password

I recently purchased new laptop which once had been switched on and had email address etc connected to internet without asking for my network key

i'm using virgin media but still required network key on old laptop

i'm viewing networks and its definitely netgear router its connecting to. also shows neighbours sky systems.

I don't have a problem with it connecting this way but does this mean others are also using my network?

Hello alan450,

If you are not connecting with a password then anyone can access your internet connection.

Open Internet explorer and type 192.168.0.1 into the address box. You will be asked for a user name and password to access the router screen. As your router is a netgear (unless you have change the password) the details should be User name: = admin Password: = password.

Once in the router setup click the Wireless Settings option (on the left of the window). Select the security options and then select the WPA2 PSK option. You can then add a password of your choosing to prevent other people accessing your internet connection.

Of course, you will need to setup your internet connection again because you will have changed the options.

Check that no passwords are set before making any changes. If your router came from your ISP they usually set a password and include it on the bottom of the router. If you purchased the router yourself then you need to set your own password.

thanks for the reply I can have a go at that.

what puzzles me is my xp laptop needed to be set up, so does this mean the hub has since lost settings or is it something in windows 8

and if I can change details wirelessly does that mean neighbour could as well

or are we talking about using Ethernet connection

been long night

Hello alan450,

If you did an upgrade then Windows 8 would have got the information from your previous version of Windows to enable it to log on to the internet. I never upgrade I always do clean installs so , in my case, I was asked during install what the password was for my connection.

Can your neighbours change the details wirelessly? They can if you are not password protected because they can do exactly what I have told you to do in my original post. However, if, as I have said, you upgraded, you may find that you already have a password and that Windows 8 gathered this information from the network log files of your previous version of windows.

For your neighbour to change setting you would, of course, have to be using the default access password, i.e., admin/password. If you change the password to something of your own creation they would not be able to gain access, unless you told them the password of course, which I am sure you wouldn't.

I had the same thing: bought a new tablet/computer combo (Asus T100TA) and I logged onto my network with being asked for the network key. Does Chrome or Windows 8 save network keys when you log onto a new machine. I do have a password set on my Tmobile hotspot.
