windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Hi, I am receiving this message when trying to play DVDs and CDs in Windows 7 operating system 64 bit:

windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I see that you are unable to play DVDs and CDs.

Quick questions:

  1. Which program are you using to play the DVDs and CDs?
  2. Do the message pops up as soon as you insert the disc or when you try to play the DVDs and CDs using a program?
  3. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

Let's try the steps and check:

Method 1:
You may try the steps from the knowledge base article and check.
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file" error when you try to install, update or start a program or file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2669244

Method 2:
Run the fix it and check.
Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can’t read or write media

Hope this helps!

Which program are you using to play the DVDs and CDs?

Windows Media Player

Do the message pops up as soon as you insert the disc or when you try to play the DVDs and CDs using a program?

No messages do not pop up as soon as the disc is inserted, in fact for some reason DVDs and CDs will not play through auto play either. I right click on the drive itself, where the DVD or CD is located and then I receive the error message. If I right click on the the drive and click open then I click autorun the CD or DVD will then play.

Have you made any changes to the computer prior to the issue

As far as I know I have not made any changes, but I sometimes leave my computer unlocked and my 9 year old gets on.

** I have not yet tried the steps you have given me but I will tonight when I get home.

Thank you so much

Hi, I ran the fix it software and it did not help. I went to the other link and most of the instructions say to right click on the file or folder. I am not sure what file or folder to right click on. When I right click on the DVD drive it does not have the same options as what this link gives in their example. When I put a DVD in the computer the DVD drive shows the title but it says for example the movie The Notebook, 0 bytes free of 7.60 GB.

Thank you for anymore help you can give!
