Windows 7 system protection shows "searching..."

Using Win 7 ent x64

 

If I look at System Protection in System Properties, it shows the following:

- System Restore button is disabled

- Protection Settings - Available Drives shows 'Searching...'

- Configure button disabled

- Create button disabled

 

How can I enable System Protection settings?

 Hi,
- Are you using any third party backup software in the computer?

Method 1: If you are using one such program, do the following:
You can turn that program off and restart the Volume Shadow Copy Service and check the status of the issue.
Follow the steps to start the Volume Shadows Copy service and it's dependencies from services.msc which may help you in fixing the issue.
Follow the steps to start the specific services:
a) Click Start and type services.
b) Check for Volume Shadow Copy service and its dependencies and ensure that the services are started.

2. If you are not using any third party backup software, you can perform check disk (chkdsk), then restart the Volume Shadow copy service and check the issue.
a) Click Start and type cmd.
b) Right click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator.
c) Type chkdsk /f E: and press Enter.
Note: E: indicates the volume name.
For Reference:
Run Check Disk from the Command Line to Find and Fix Errors

Method 2: Disable Antivirus & Firewall
If you have any third party Antivirus program installed on your computer try to disable Antivirus and Firewall and check if it helps.
Disable Antivirus on or off

Turn Windows Firewall on or off
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off
Note: Running the computer without firewall or the anti-virus software is a potential threat to the computer; make sure to enable the security software after completing the troubleshooting steps and after identifying the issue.
