Microsoft Works Word Processor on Windows 10?

Hello, My question is simple, can I download "Microsoft Works Word Processor " onto my new computer which is now running Windows 10? I still have this programme on an old laptop but as it is getting a "bit long in the tooth" now (the laptop that is), it over-heats so I can't really use it as I would like. I like to create my own greeting cards, and store my poems etc.  so love the many options for making each project personal.

     Thank you for any help.

Some users have reported version 8.5 and 9 works on Windows 10, you could try.

Otherwise, you could use an alternative such as Libre Office which includes the Writer word processor or Office Word Online.

Thank you Andre for a very prompt reply. I have tried searching for the versions 8.5 and 9 but with no luck, I don't have the correct address. Looks like I will have to settle for the Libre Office. It looks promising, so fingers crossed.

As a curiosity.......... could I possibly transfer the programme from my old lap-top onto my new one?  Just a thought.

Unfortunately Works itself is also a bit "long in the tooth" and was discontinued in 2009.

Although it was sold as a stand alone product the vast majority of installations were bundled with the computer. Under the terms of the OEM license you can't transfer it to another computer.

The Works Spreadsheets were basically Excel compatible, changing the extension of any old spreadsheets to XLS should allow them to be opened even by Libre Office.

Documents are more of a problem as the file format was specific. Word has an importer otherwise opening them to read the text in the file may be possible if the extension is changed to TXT, there will however be lots of garbage to work through to find the actual text.

Also bear in mind that Windows does have a free word processor built in. Functionally basic but if all you want to do is type letters etc. then type Wordpad in the start menu to create no frills documents.

This is the problem Andre the programmes on W. 10 are far too basic for what I want to do, i.e. greeting cards etc. I have now installed Libre Office and from what I can work out it looks quite promising for my needs. Will find out tomorrow when I have a play with it. Off to bed now, it's almost 01.00 here. Goodnight and thank you for all your help.

Immediately.

Windows 10 comes with a Word Processor "out of the box". Click on Start and type wordpad to open it

Wordpad is a basic but reasonably serviceable word processor. Because its default file format is .rtf (rich text format) there are limits as to what can be done with it but many of the features that make up Word, Pages, Writer are not strictly speaking word processing but the function of a desktop publishing program.

In fact one of the pitfalls of these other programs is people put in far too many gimmicks and eye candy, often inappropriate for the task. One example would be a CV, any recruiter would recommend a CV should be clear, concise and simple to read. With no bells and whistles Wordpad helps enforce that discipline.

When .doc started to become a "standard" for documents Wordpad's .rtf was a handicap but now PDF has become the accepted format and Windows 10 has an inbuilt PDF file "printer" Wordpad will fit many tasks.

Yes it will work on Win 10..

I installed it from the disc that came with my Win XP  but do not use it very often because sometimes it will close for no reason and can be really aggravating if you are in the middle of something..

I primarily use Lebre  but also have "Open Office" that I use sometimes. Both are excellent programs.

As for creating cards and other things, I use "Print Master".. it's a fantastic program for everything from calendars to business cards to Christmas cards and a lot of other things.

Do a internet search for it and you can find free versions of it like I did.

Therefore it doesn't work

For software to be considered as working it needs to be reliable and consistent. The vast majority of the inconsistencies with Windows are due to external issues, not problems with Windows itself.
