Windows 10 Start Menu Reset

Hello,

I've just installed the win 10 fall updates (version 1809). Now, whenever I reboot, windows restores the default start menu apps and icons, eliminating my customizations.

A) Why is this happening?

B) What can I do to stop it?

C) How can I backup my start menu after I finish customizing it so I can restore it if this should happen in the future? I've searched thoroughly and fruitlessly for a backup solution myself...

Thank you very much for any help you can provide me on the most annoying problem!

Hi Joel. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

We've been trying to get this issues resolved for several years now. If you want to add your opinion to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. They will not even see it here. This is a tech forums staffed mostly by volunteers trying to help others with your problems.

If you want to post back a Share link from your Feedback here others who see this thread can vote it up and add to it. I will also track the issue for you.

You can back up your Start menu these ways:

Thanks Greg...Unfortunately, I've tried following the instructions as given for backing up the start menu. No such options show up on my Computer Management screen. It may be because I have the Home version of Win 10? Nor do I find the suggested directory: "C:\Users\YOUR-ACCOUNT-NAME\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer" on my PC (and, yes, I have enabled the viewing of hidden files and filename extensions. Arggggh! This is frustrating the dickens out of me.

I believe I'll attempt to remove the 1809 update and see if that doesn't give me temporary relief.

Thanks for trying.

Joel

Joel, looks like they've moved the Start menu database in the last version. I will try to find it or an alternative method to get back to you soon.

Thanks for reporting this!

OK, try the PowerShell Commands to back up Start menu here: https://www.intowindows.com/how-to-export-and-i...

Then there are two third party tools to try here as a secondary backup:
https://winaero.com/blog/backup-restore-start-m...
https://www.intowindows.com/how-to-backup-resto...

Please let us know how these work.

Has any one fixed this yet? I reported it on these forums and no one from MS has given a solution that works. The only thing I have worked out is that if I create a new user then the menu works fine for them, so can someone tell me where the menu is now stored (its changed) and then I'll be able to copy a good menu over the bad one

Hello Roger,

I spoke with Microsoft Tech Support Yesterday about a different issue I was having. They solved that problem :-) After, I asked about the annoying Start Menu problem. He told me to look for a possible patch/update fix for that on Friday's update. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Which Friday and which update are your referring to? There was no update yesterday and MS release patches on the second Tuesday of each month

The rerelease of 1809 is here, so I installed it for the first time, and the November patch, and lo and behold my start menu resets every log on. It also refuses to do anything when I flip the Use Start full screen toggle.
