[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

Partially Fixed as of June 26, 2018.

  • Please Update to Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165+
  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes.

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)  >Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

I think your laptop is "wired" a lot differently than our optimus laptops. I think your dgpu is seen as an external gpu (comparable to those external thunderbolt graphics boxes) so it's maybe a bandwidth issue; anyways, your symptoms are a bit beyond what a fix for our problem would solve (stutter when starting certain apps, mouse cursor freeze, related audio freeze, etc.)

Try some of this - play with the laptop plugged in, you should see a world of difference in framerates, maybe even see stutters disappear, make sure the games you're playing are actually running on your dedicated 1060, close all other apps before starting a game, lower the graphics settings considerably, make sure the games you're playing are in full screen mode, delete nvidia and or intel graphics drivers, reinstall them, not necessarily the latest drivers. Also, are these machines upgradeable? It could just be insufficient ram, 8gb is kinda almost, but not really ok these days, preferably you want 16 to be sure it's not insufficient memory. Also, a clean windows install like in the days of yore might also put your machine back on track. windows is so huge these days that the purely statistical chance of some piece of essential code becoming corrupted is so much higher.

Also check temperatures, make sure the vents are not blocked and also, get real, don't expect a mobile 1060 (especially in a super thin tabletty kind of laptop) to be super fluid if you're not lowering graphics with some aplomb. Fallout 4 is poorly optimized, would stutter even on 1080ti in certain circumstances, so lower lighting and shadows a lot, Witcher 3, you also want to take a ton of settings down, plus this one tends to overheat your laptop consistently more than F4, even when not much is happening on screen, even at lower graphics detail. But definitely, as long as you play within reasonable settings and plugged in, frequent stuttering should not occur.

So to conclude and keep it relatively on topic, no, persistent gaming stuttering is not the same as our momentary app/settings initiation stutters and freezes, so I wouldn't expect a potential fix for our problem to also solve your problem.

Hey guys so I found my own personal fix for the problem. I reverted the Windows 10 version all the way back to 1607 and reinstalled the Nvidia driver provided by the manufacturer and now its much smoother. Will keep testing though. My PC is a Lenovo Y720 with the i7 7700HQ and a GTX 1060

So can you tell if the dGPU is always on (for example if you have an LED light for the dGPU like on MSI laptops) or if it turns on on-demand, as it should, when you need it?

damn, finally i found the problem like anybody here.

but no solution ....

Edit: nvidia sent me this:

can someone please try to see if it works?

To check if this is an issue with the GPU driver let's Try "Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) " to completely uninstall AMD/NVIDIA graphics card drivers and packages from your system, without leaving leftovers behind (including registry keys, folders and files, driver store) :

https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=792

  a. Download and extract it to your desktop. Please change the extraction location manually by clicking the tab on the right side.
  b. Go to your Desktop and you can see DisplayDriverUninstaller.exe
  c. You need to double click and Run the file and it will then open the DDU Box.
  d. Select the Launch option - Normal and then click Launch
  e. You can then select Clean & restart. After the successful uninstallation you need to restart the computer.

After restarting the PC you need to download and install the latest driver from NVIDIA.

Driver to install : http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/130637/en-us

While installing the suggested driver, please choose custom advance option and perform the clean driver installation.
After the successful installation You must reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

If the issue is still there then please share the system information file for further analysis.

I've done this several times when updating to latest NVidia drivers. It does not fix the desktop stutter problems or change anything.

Build 17093 for PC is out and it comes with a handy feature: GPU selection! Of course this does not fix our issue but it is a good sign showing that Microsoft is working on GPU handling.
