Move the OneDrive Folder

Technical Level : Basic

Summary

Learn how to move the OneDrive folder to a new location. This is useful if you have a limited storage capacity main drive but a separate storage drive and you want your OneDrive content synced to the separate drive.

The scope of this article is for the personal version of OneDrive on Windows 10 and earlier versions. Please refer to the table below for additional support for the following products:

Many people use two separate drives on their computers: a main drive like an SSD to run the operating system and other programs, and a regular hard drive to store the bulk of their content. OneDrive defaults to the C:\User\<username>\OneDrive location, however you can change it wherever you want.

Move the OneDrive Folder in Windows 10, Windows 7, and Previous Operating Systems

To change the OneDrive folder location in Windows 10, Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows, you must unlink OneDrive from your account and then repeat the setup process:

  1. Create a new folder called "OneDrive" in the desired location
  2. Right-click on the OneDrive icon in the notification area and then select Settings
  3. Select "Account" and then select "Unlink this PC"
  4. Follow the setup process again and ensure to select the new drive or location to have OneDrive sync to; you must wait for your files to download again to the new location
  5. (Optional) Follow these Microsoft instructions to move the folder without downloading data again: Change the location of your OneDrive folder

Special Instructions - Move OneDrive to SD Card

Based on multiple posts in the OneDrive forum and comments on this article, obviously moving to an SD card doesn't work. It does seem to work though if you create a VHD (virtual hard drive) on the SD card:

Thanks to BenToan for the reference.

Move the OneDrive Folder in Windows 8.1

To change the OneDrive folder location in Windows 8.1, you can simply change the location directly through the Properties menu of the OneDrive folder:

  1. Create a new folder called "OneDrive" in the desired location
  2. Open File Explorer, right-click on the OneDrive folder in the navigation pane (left-hand side), and then select Properties
  3. Click the "Location" tab and then select "Move"
  4. Select the location where you want OneDrive to sync to and then click OK

OneDrive will move all of your OneDrive files from the default location to the new location; you don't have to wait for files to download again.

Post-move Instructions - Windows User Permissions

If you move the OneDrive folder to a new location, it inherits the folder permissions of the parent folder (or drive if the OneDrive folder is placed at the root directory). You'll need to update the Windows user permissions to the new OneDrive folder that used to exist on the old folder, else that folder will be viewable by everyone who uses the machine.

This is for OneDrive, not OneDrive for Business. Please post a question in this forum:

Granted that's a SharePoint forum, you can find many posts there about OneDrive for Business since SkyDrive Pro was only available with SharePoint.

Hi. Thanks for the reply and your time. OneDrive for Business is an element of Office 365 services which includes SharePoint online and Lync online.

I have posted here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/7fef3c4c-643b-4d3d-a075-ea52912ea6c9/how-to-change-the-change-the-onedrive-for-business-folder-location?forum=officeitpro and I am hopeful of resolution

Thank you for this article. It taught me about the move location function in windows explorer. How long has that been there? Is it a thing new to windows 8? I'm on a little dell latitude tablet with very limited hdd space, only 64gb which 57gb is usable and a heap taken up by windows, so its a little cramped. Previously I was including folders on a 128gb sd card in the card reader slot in my libraries, but I think i'll play around with actually moving the location of files in the default user home directory folders over to the sd card so my libraries aren't so cluttered. Are there any downsides or side effects of this approach? Thanks again!

Thanks! That functionality has been there since Windows 8.1 was released. I'm not sure of any downsides to using an SD card except accidentally removing it. Please remember Windows 8.1 OneDrive doesn't download the entirety of your files, it downloads smart files so the total space they take up on your tablet is drastically reduced.

You stated - Change the OneDrive Location in Windows 8 and Previous. I am using Windows 7 64-bit with SSD as C: and D:\Programs Storage.

To change the OneDrive folder location in Windows 8 and previous versions, you have TO unlink OneDrive from your account and then repeat the setup process:

1. Right-click on the OneDrive icon in the notification area (see below) and then select Settings

2. Select "Settings" and then select "Unlink OneDrive"

3. Follow the setup process again and ensure to select the new drive or location to have OneDrive sync to; you must wait for your files to download again to the new location.

Opened Windows Explorer in Windows 7 and see OneDrive under Favorites. Cannot do anything here. Went to C: to Users to GIGABYTE (computer name) to OneDrive. Right click on Properties and I get these tabs, General, Sharing, Security, Previous Versions, Customize.

I was able to MOVE other folders like Program Files & Program Files (x86) without any trouble.

The OneDrive on C:\Users\GIGABYTE\OneDrive does not have the same files in it as the OneDrive on D:\ProgramStorage\OneDrive.

Went to my other computer, desktop using Windows 8.1, and I can see the same files in its OneDrive that is in this OneDrive on C:\Users\GIGABYTE\OneDrive.
