Update 02/22/2020:

Additional Information for users hitting temporary profile issue on 21/02/2020:

Microsoft is aware of some customers logging into temporary profile after installing KB4532693, on both versions 1903 and 1909.

  • Rebooting into Safe Mode* and then starting back in normal Mode should resolve this issue for most customers.
  • You may uninstall any secure banking software or anti-virus in the temporary profile which may resolve this if the above steps do not help.

*To boot into Safe mode, Click Shift+Restart button on the login screen, select Advanced options>Startup Settings>Select 1 for the booting to safe mode. Restarting the computer should start the computer in normal mode. For booting into Safe mode, you would be asked for a password instead of a PIN if you have set.

Your Feedback is highly encouraged as it helps Microsoft in identifying the root cause.

Hello.  Sorry to post a random question here, but a bit new at this.  Just installed the latest Feb 2020 Windows 10 updates.  Upon completion it appears to have reset the display to default windows system.  That is, all custom icons missing, background returned to windows logo, would not recognise my logon, set a temp logon.

I had to uninstall the latest updates to return to previous good operation and display.  Any ideas?  FYI.  Two of my neighbors had the same issue and we had to uninstall this update.

Thank you for your time and support.

Well, at least there are 3 of us.  Neighbor has a new Dell tower, everything standard, and had this problem.  Some past posts suggested the same issue with updates, but that was several years ago.  There were no solutions posted.  Guess we shall wait and see if there is a solution suggestion.

If it makes you feel better, there are more cases reported in various languages about the temporary account issue.

I would suggest uninstalling the update and blocking it for 7 days. if the issue occurs. But only then.

An open mind doesn't mean that information is coming and going without leaving an impression.

You're right this does happen and no one seems to know why. What fixes it for some users is to restart 4 times using Start > Power > Restart and check again.

You are signed in with a temp profile and it suggests the update didn't complete successfully. The restarts sometimes fix the temp profile.

Harsh, but perhaps worth a try.  If this fixes the temp profile, any word if this restores the icons and background.  I guess it would if it starts with the correct profile and not a temp profile.

Thank you for the response and "worth a try" idea.

This update broke 2 of my PC's (a new dell notebook and an older Lenovo think center).  The ONLY way MS tech support could fix this was to uninstall KB4532693, the block updates for 7 days.

Most folks don't have a windows recover USB or CD, but if you do, that would be one way to try a repair.  No guarantee what would be save as far as applications.  You would need to boot from that USB or CD.

That is one of the last resorts.

However. one gentleman suggested restarting 4 times.  I have not tried that.  Another usual suggestion is to boot into "safe mode" if you are even able to do that.

Not sure what the suggestions to disable updates for 7 days would do unless somebody has a patch to release in 7 days.  But it would be wise to stop update until something is resolved.  I stopped updates for a couple of weeks to try different solutions each time I try the update.  I was able to uninstall the update, sounds like you do not have that option.  I did do a total backup to an external hard disk now.   I will try the updates later..... again.  I learn the hard way.

Sorry not a sure fire suggestion here.

Installing this update trashed my user profile and created a temp. Uninstalling it returned my user profile back to near normal. I tried installing it a 2nd time with the same results.  Also, it reinstalled One Drive (which I don't use) and started migrating files to the cloud after it demanded I log in with my Microsoft account.. So, I uninstalled it again and restored my original user profile. After the 2nd install and removal, Outlook was trashed as well and had to be fixed. Does Microsoft even test these updates before they push them out?
