MAJOR BUG: Surface Book Forgets It's Plugged In & Stops Charging After Detatching & Re-Attaching Clipboard (When Plugged into Dock)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Plug Surface Book into Dock & turn it on
  2. Observe plugged in/charging indicator in task bar
  3. Detach Clipboard and use as tablet for a bit, leaving keyboard base plugged into dock/power.
  4. Re-attach Clipboard and observe success message
  5. Note the battery status in the task bar recognizes both batteries but thinks it's not plugged in (even though the white charging LED on the plug is on).

Removing the plug and plugging it back in fixes the issue. I usually only remember after I've drained quite a bit of my battery.

*** And yes, this is after installing all updates and rebooting / re-checking for any new updates several times. ***

MODERATOR EDIT (11/10/2015):  I am glad that simply disconnecting and reconnecting the Surface Dock from the Surface Book keyboard resolves the charging issue, at least until the next detach>attach of the clipboard.  Microsoft is working on a solution, for now please continue to use your workaround.  Additional details will posted to this thread when available. <Josh

I woke up this morning to find my surface 100% drained because of this very issue. Absolutely infuriating!

Seems like Surface Book early adopters are just glorified beta testers!

I am having the same issue.

Not only that but once I put the Clipboard back on the keyboard base, my external monitor/keyboard/mouse keep disconnecting.  I get the remove/add USB device sound playing over and over and all of my devices keep connecting and disconnecting.  The only solution was to reboot.

I had that too once.

B.C.CA,

Thanks for your query.

I understand you have installed updates however can you confirm you have checked in your update history for

“Surface Hardware Update – 10/23/2015” and fully installed?

Does this occur every time ? Can you identify a specific scenario when this happens?

Try this also: Unplug the power cable, flip it and plug it back in, does it make a difference?

Please keep us posted.

Respectfully,
Ben_Mk

Hi Ben,

1. Yes, it's fully installed and shows in the update history.

2. Yes, happens every time. Easy to reproduce following my steps above.

3. Yes, happens no matter what direction the plug faces.

Here are pics of the problem with the plug in each orientation:

Also, the dock fails to work after re-attaching the screen, leaving my external monitors off, and all other dock connections unreachable.

Same here.  Fully updated and having the exact same issue.  Today when I put the clipboard back on the keyboard, everything stopped responding.  No charging, no pen, no keyboard/mouse/monitor and the surface book was completely frozen.  Had to do a hard reset.  Very frustrating.

I just want to chime in with a "me too". My Surface Book (i7,16GB,512GB) has also lost track of the fact that it's connected to a charger in the past. There is another case of this that I've seen, where I plug the power connector into a powered-down Surface Book, the power connector LED goes on, I power on the Surface Book, but when it boots it is not aware of being connected.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Plug the power connector into a powered-off Surface Book,
  2. Verify that the power connector LED is on,
  3. Power on the Surface Book.

Expected Result:

  • Surface Book powers on in plugged-in mode.
  • Power connector LED continues to be ON.

Result (intermittent):

  • Surface Book powers on in battery mode (not charging),
  • Power connector LED continues to be ON.

I'm hoping that this is not a hardware defect, because I've read about the shortage of replacements :-(

Ok. Just to be 100% certain I downloaded the Surface Drivers .MSI from Microsoft and installed them all manually, rebooted twice, and tested this again. Still a problem. Also, while the screens typically remain working through the Dock, things plugged into its USB ports often cut out, making the usb device disconnected chime sound.

I am seeing the same errors.  SB not charging after returning the clipboard to the plugged in keyboard base.
