Update on Skype for Windows desktop installer – version 7.40 and lower

At Skype, we take security very seriously.

There was an issue with an older version of the Skype for Windows desktop installer – version 7.40 and lower. The issue was in the program that installs the Skype software – the issue was not in the Skype software itself. Customers who have already installed this version of Skype for Windows desktop are not affected. We have removed this older version of Skype for Windows desktop from our website skype.com.

The installer for the current version of Skype for Windows desktop (v8) does NOT have this issue, and it has been available since October, 2017.

Skype stopped working for me completely.  all messages sat like a pin wheel unless I closed and restarted skype so I uninstalled it and went to an older version when everything I tried said problem with the downloader go to the Microsoft store and download from there.  I can't even get any version to download or install.. not the old 7.4 or the version I keep downloading from the skype website.

Is there a place I can get the msi version not the exe version or a version that will stop telling me to go to the microsoft store because all that offers is the windows ten other verison and yes I am on windows ten but I like the classic skype not what the microsoft store is offering.

Thanks,

Gina

Hello Gina,

Right click the downloaded 8.x msi file and put it in Windows 7 compatibility mode, then install as normal.

It looks very much like the Windows 10 version now anyway.

We have removed this older version of Skype for Windows desktop from our website skype.com.

Did you remove it back in October 2017 or only yesterday? I think it was still available this week.

What if i want to use the old skype software, the latest version looks like an older one there is no option nor personalization at all.

If you guys want your costumer not to leave, there should be a big update coming soon i hope, this "Simple" downgraded version of skype doesn't looks like will keep your costumer from using it they will just move on to another social software.

By the way, im really upset about what you guys are doing with skype.

Um.

Can you confirm you've removed the Skype for Desktop (legacy) client? Is it now officially dead? Will it continue to receive updates?

Yes, I want to continue using the "old" version and will continue to do so.  The myriad new versions don't even compare.

If MS wants to keep people happy, it will continue to allow this to happen, even if the client is basically in "maintenance mode" from here on (like releasing the occasional security update or whatever--probably not much of anything beyond that).

that new skype is a horrendous disaster. it lacks EVERYTHING that the classic desktop app had.

you better send it to the trash and start focusing again on the classic app.

we don't want another colorful clone of snapchat, we never asked for it.

Edit (2) to note that you can get the desktop app by visiting the Skype download page with IE not Edge and by running the EXE in compatibility mode and that this is confusingly hard (as well as my frustration that Skype UWP still can't *paste into the dialler when you're in a call because conference PINs that are 12 digits long, or even press zero on the keypad in a call because IVR).

"The installer for the current version of Skype for Windows desktop (v8)" is a very confusing way to put this; this whole clarification has left me more confused than ever

Did this vulnerability ever affect Skype FOR BUSINESS?  If so, what version number was that fixed in.  Skype for business uses a different version numbering scheme.
