Style separator in Word 2016 for Mac

Hi, I am working on my dissertation and I need to create a List of Figures and List of Tables. However, I have long descriptions within the Caption field, which I do not want to appear in the List. I have been trying to change the style of the text following the title in so many ways, but nothing seems to help.

I have been trying to find some information about this issue, but it seems that Word 2016 does not have what was called before a "Style separator" and the tricks that people suggest are for older versions of Word.

Can someone, help me to figure out what to do?

Thanks!

Answer

It's true that Mac Word does not provide style separators. It's a bit of a chore, but it can be simulated by making the caption into 2 separate paragraphs. For example:

Perhaps the caption reads:

Figure 1- Teamwork: Sharing knowledge with others is a beautiful thing!

but you want to include only

Figure 1-Teamwork

  1. Display the nonprinting characters
  2. Place the insertion point between the k & the colon
  3. Press return
  4. Select only the ¶ that now follows the k
  5. Go to Format> Font, check Hidden

The caption will display as 2 separate paragraphs while the nonprinting characters are displayed but will appear as a single paragraph when they're turned off. The 2nd paragraph will not be included when you generate the Table of Figures.
