Insiders: New Office Start Experience for Windows clients - tell us what you think!

Hello!

My name is Patrick and I am a program manager from the Office Shared experiences team.

Our team is embarking on a series of improvements to make it easier to start your work. Our vision for the new Start Page will help you effectively find files important to you, create new content, and keep up with the latest activities in your documents.

The Start Page improvements will occur in stages. We want to give you a preview of what Insiders will start seeing in the coming weeks, but know that this is just the first step in a larger set of changes to the Start Page experience. Along the way we'll continue to learn how to best cater to your needs. In that vein, we want to hear from our end users, as your feedback is critical in helping us shape things to come! Tell us what you think of the new design and what you like/don't like/want to see added.

Here’s the first update you will see in the next week or two, starting with builds >9307, in Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Windows - the updates will start for English initially and we'll continue to expand the markets as we go further into the development process:

We’ve given more real estate to the Recent Documents list, based on your feedback, and compacted the templates experience to start. That said, the full list of Templates is just one click away in the 'New' tab. Similarly, the full file browsing experience is one click away in the 'Open' tab. You will also be able to get back to this experience from the file menu (unlike today’s apps) by clicking on the Home icon.

Known issues: Currently we are aware of an issue where in some cases templates may not show up initially - we are currently working on the fix for this issue.

Here’s an early, conceptual  look at some of the additional improvements coming down the line (Office.com will also begin to show this experience in the coming weeks as well, so check the web version of the experience!)

Looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Patrick (on behalf of the Office Start team)

I hope there is a focus on making it even easier to open and save files to Teams right from Office apps. Skipping the root folders and going right to Channel folder names.

Hi Ed,

We actually have part of that capability already! We released a feature earlier this year that integrates with your frequently used and followed SharePoint sites connected to Groups/Teams.

So if you go to File> Open and are signed into your Office365 account (Org-ID) - if you click on the SharePoint icon, you should see a list of the sites associated with your Groups and Teams.

Now I think what you are looking for is the next level, which is navigating directly to the Team channel folder, and that is something we don't support yet- but we are looking to improve the overall experience here, separate from the Start Page.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Patrick

Yes, it is going right to the channels. When a user opens their Team and they get:

  • Documents
  • Maintenance Log Library
  • Teams Wiki Data

as their first directory choice it starts to get confusing.

And it gets worse if they save a file to the Documents folder, as you cannot see anything in that folder in Teams. It should go straight to the channels, and the channel list should be read-only - meaning you cannot save there.

But yes, I love that we can do at least what we can now. So much better than it was before this enhancement. It just requires more training than should be necessary to open/close files.

It would be like Office on the desktop starting to open or save new files at the C:\ drive instead of C:\Users\Username\Documents. Mass chaos.

This looks outstanding.  The Office team has really put in the best work on 365 over the past couple of years.  Keep up the great work!

are you making any improvements to account for OneDrive Files On Demand? All my pinned folders are in OneDrive and if I'm offline they should open the local OneDrive folder - but they just tell me I'm not connected and leave me to navigate to the folder myself.

so you're taking all of the width previously used for icons and using it for one very wide list with (eventually) three tabs; the design wastes a lot of space vertically and horizontally - you only have 7 files shown but you're using more height than you currently use to show 12 files

it's important for me to keep the information density high here

- will we still be able to choose how many files are shown in the recent list?

-will the tab I last opened be sticky?  I want to see my pinned files first the way they are on the jump list

- can we have the option to show and hide the file path so we can see more files without scrolling?- can you experiment with putting the lists side by side when the window is large enough to do so?

Mary,

Thanks for the feedback here!

so you're taking all of the width previously used for icons and using it for one very wide list with (eventually) three tabs; the design wastes a lot of space vertically and horizontally - you only have 7 files shown but you're using more height than you currently use to show 12 files

We will be using that space for some upcoming enhancements - stay tuned!

it's important for me to keep the information density high here

So we will definitely consider the points you are bringing up as we evolve the design in the coming months!

Keep in mind also that we will still have the full New and Open experiences available as well in the menu. Appreciate the feedback!

Thanks - I'm keen to keep the equivalent of the long list of pinned and recent on the Start experience because that's what I have today without having to click through to anything else like Open and I'd rather not have to go deeper into the menu to do what I can already do today ;)

This is a beautiful concept! I can't wait to see it in action.

I'm also loving how the teams are starting to make discussions about things like this.
