How to block automatic reinstall of a driver or update from Windows Update

Windows Update keeps automatically installing a new driver or update that causes my system to crash. Is there a way to stop Windows Update from installing this driver or update?

Hi Babu,

A troubleshooter is now available that provides a user interface for hiding and showing Windows Updates and drivers for Windows 10 Insider Preview.

So, if a driver or update you are being offered is causing system crashes or instability and Windows was operating correctly prior to that update, you can follow these instructions to prevent the unwanted driver or update from being installed:

To uninstall the unwanted driver:

  1. Launch the Device Manager with a right click on the lower left corner of the desktop and a left click on Device Manager.
  2. Located the device driver with the problem driver installed, right click and choose Uninstall.
  3. In the uninstall dialog, check the box to Delete the driver software for this device if available.

To uninstall an unwanted Windows Update:

  1. Type “View Installed Updates” in the Search box and then click on View Installed Updates – Control Panel from the Search results.

  2. To uninstall the unwanted update, select it from the list and then click Uninstall.

Then, to prevent the driver or update from being reinstalled, download and run the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter described in KB 3073930. (Or run the troubleshooter directly by clicking here.)  Follow the instructions within the troubleshooter, and then select to hide the problematic driver or update.

Thank You

I ran the window auto program suggested.  It didn't find any errors or problems.  I know which driver i want to stop updating.  AMD graphics update makes my screen dim, and takes away the brightness adjustment bar.  I have roll back the driver every day.  Going on since October.  I just want to stop that driver from updating.    Why has windows taken away options for updates?

Don't do a rollback, follow these instructions:

-Let Windows Update install the version of the driver it wants to, and do not uninstall it

-Go to device manager (devmgmt.msc) and find your device

-Right-click on it, and hit "Update driver software"

-Click "Browse my computer for driver software"

-Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

-Select the version of the driver you want
