Adobe XD on RS5

The first Redstone 5 update broke Adobe XD CC (probably a problem with sets as XD is a UWP app). The app would open on a white screen, hang for a few seconds, and crash. I had to take my laptop off of the skip ahead ring due to this issue. Does anyone know if this has been fixed in more recent updates?? I've seen nothing about it in changelogs.

Have you checked with Adobe as you are using a beta build which hasn't been released to any 3rd party developers for code check.

I submitted the problem on the Feedback hub and it said it shared the information with Adobe. I didn't think to ask their support or anything, so I'll look into that.

Update: I checked on their forums and they said they don't focus on bug fixes for beta builds of OSes

Update: As of build 17666, XD is still not working. Does the same exact thing as before, but I will say it hangs for a second longer before crashing.

I see "event 5961" logged.

Only thing it led to to was this support article, however I don't believe this is the correct diagnosis in this case.

Microsoft Store Apps fail to start if default registry or file permissions modified

Update: There is a thread on the Adobe forums where the issue is acknowledged as under investigation:

Adobe XD crashes on startup...

My logs are below, I guess we are all seeing the same issue though.

I see "event 5961" logged.

Only thing it led to to was this support article, however I don't believe this is the correct diagnosis in this case.

Microsoft Store Apps fail to start if default registry or file permissions modified

Why?  That is an unusually complete troubleshooter.  What all did you try to do with it?  A way of supplementing and checking it hypothesis would be to run ProcMon and capture whatever actual registry permissions were wrong.  It might even be sufficient to just use the Count Occurrences tool on the Result field and filter from that.

Otherwise it would be nice if Adobe would share some diagnostics.

PS>cd ~\Desktop\Err
PS>.\err 0x80040904
# as an HRESULT: Severity: FAILURE (1), Facility: 0x4, Code 0x904
# for hex 0x904 / decimal 2308 :
  ecExpDivByZero                                                ec.h
  SQL_2308_severity_16                                          sql_err
# %sReference to an undefined name '%ls' within namespace
# '%ls'
# 2 matches found for "0x80040904"
PS>net helpmsg (0x904)

The system cannot find message text for message number 0x904 in the message file for NETMSG.

Here's why I think the troubleshooter is on the right track

Sig[7].Name=Exception Code
Sig[7].Value=80070005

PS>net helpmsg (0x5)

Access is denied.

There are better diagnostic hints in an earlier incident about the same symptom with an earlier version.

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2283870

(BING search for

    AppCrash_Adobe.CC.XD
)

Then, again, ProcMon would help discover such supplementary diagnostic files.  Filter with Operation Is WriteFile and use its Count Occurrences tool on the Path field.

Good luck

Robert Aldwinckle

Thank you for you assistance.

Why? That is an unusually complete troubleshooter.  What all did you try to do with it?

I didn't (and still don't) believe it is the correct diagnosis in this case mostly through process of elimination:

  1. I haven't changed file system permissions and registry permissions. Nor is group policy being used to manage permissions on my PC.
  2. I can find no reports of anyone with Redstone 5 being able to successfully run XD. If the cause was that "Registry and or file system permissions may have been changed from their defaults" I would't expect it to affect every machine (as some would presumably still be using these defaults).
  3. Adobe XD runs on stable versions of Windows 10.

I am afraid I am not a Windows native so the the Process Monitor diagnostics has been hard going.

I captured filtering to events form the process to "XD CC.exe".

Filtering by WriteFile operations there is only one event and the result is SUCCESS. It is for this file:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Adobe.CC.XD_adky2gkssdxte\TempState\logLevel.txt

Filtering the result to anything other than SUCCESS returned more results, but that still left a few events and possibilities. There are many unsuccessful results including BUFFER_OVERFLOW on a QuerySecurityFile operation and SHARING_VIOLATION on a CreateFile operation. Both for the same file:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Adobe.CC.XD_adky2gkssdxte\AC\GEH\POF.dat

Interestingly just before the SHARING_VIOLATION CreateFile operation there is another CreateFile operation on the same file which results in a SUCCESS (these occur within three ten-thousandths of a second (0.0003) of each other).

Speculation now but to me this suggests some kind of race condition. A quick glance at the Google results for "createfile sharing violation" indicates it is a problem others have grappled with.

I think I am going to put my feet up now and leave this to Adobe.

It is launching for me in the latest preview build (1803).

Build 1803? That's an RS4 update for Windows 10 Server, not an RS5 update

Maybe you mean build 17677?

I think aThingOrTwo meant win10 version 1803 build 17677 (Skip ahead - fast ring)

Updating to this latest insider preview now, because I still can't start XD (Windows.UI.Xaml.dll) on current build 17672.1

Edit: Adobe XD still crashes on 17677, but after loading a (new) project and performing actions like scrolling or typing it still crashes, logging a TextInputFramework.dll error.

Exactly.

Adobe XD is working fine on 1803 and I think MS is playing a bit too much with the UI shell that they are unintentionally breaking other things. BTW they fixed the issue related to the XAMLUI.dll in 17677.

They have been playing around quite a bit with the reveal effect and UI in general.

I started a similar thread on XD forums and just finished a call with their support executive. We all are having issues with RS5 builds.

Hope MS fixes it with the next build.
