Hello Insiders!

Today we have released build 15042 for PC to Insiders in the Fast ring.  As part of this release, there’s a known issue that will affect a small percentage of users.  Knowing this, we wanted to document the issue and share the workaround you may perform if you encounter this issue during the 15042 install.  Please read below for details and further steps.

Issue Details

Who:     Insiders installing build 15042 to their PC

Issue:    During the 15042 install, your PC may “hang” and become unresponsive at the Windows boot logo screen

Why:     One of the required install processes may initialize but not complete or timeout, thus causing the “hang”

What to do:     There are no lasting effects from this issue.  Please see the workaround steps below to continue with your update

Workaround Steps

For users who encounter this issue, the following steps will allow you to work around this issue.

  1. Manually reboot your PC if it “hangs” at the boot logo during the first attempt to install build 15042
  2. Allow your PC to successfully roll back to your previous OS build
  3. Log into your PC and open a Command Prompt (Admin) window:

***NOTE***  You MUST do this in Command Prompt, NOT PowerShell!  :)

    Click Start
    Type Command Prompt
Right-click Command Prompt (desktop app) in the results listSelect Run as Administrator
    Click Yes to confirm

  4. One line at a time, paste these commands into the command prompt window.  Press enter after each line:

    reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\setup\upgrade\nsimigrationroot /f

netsh int ipv6 set locality state=disabled

    reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nsi\{eb004a01-9b1a-11d4-9123-0050047759bc}\28 /f

  5. Close the Command prompt window
  6. Reboot your PC
  7. Re-scan for updates and re-attempt the install

Completing these steps will allow you to proceed and install build 15042 as expected.  If you encounter any issues, please post up and let us know.

Thank you as always!

Jason

I take it that there are no steps to perform before running the upgrade to guarantee avoiding the issue, as opposed to taking the above steps afterwards?

My upgrade failed and it reverted the upgrade. So I had to do it in build 15031 and restart the update. It is currently preparing, so I do not know if this helped.

So I'd suggest you to just do those steps either way.

EDIT: It worked!

That's a good question.  I have to say that I didn't test this on a machine before trying the update.  We of course found the issue and derived the workaround after seeing the install hang on a few different PCs.

It's only a small % of users that will hit this, so the vast majority of Insiders won't need to do these steps.

Do you know if this can be enabled again after a successful upgrade?

netsh int ipv6 set locality state=disable

Not sure if the root problem is the same but the symptom is the same, system hangs while upgrading ( descriptive percentage and the spinning dots ), this has been happening long time ago, to avoid this problem, while the system is restarting after preparing the upgrade procedure don't let the system boot, when system goes to bios boot screen just power off and do a cold boot, doing this the upgrade occur without issues.

Jason, do you know if this is related to the problems people have been having with every new build for months on Surface Pro 3s? The workaround has been to pull out the SD card (and possibly detach the keyboard) and the update will proceed. My SP3 was stuck at 87% just now until I pulled out the SD card for 5 sec then reinserted it as the % changed to 89%

I haven't made the registry changes.

I also had the problem, and the 3 commands helped me. Thanks. I wish I knew more about "who is susceptible" to this problem.

It seems like it would be very difficult to know, as someone executing the commands beforehand and then not experiencing the issue doesn't prove anything.

Anyway, I can't even recall the last time that I had to roll back a build, but I was impressed that it kicked in after the second hard reboot and only took about 5 minutes. Also, when going back to WU, the build didn't have to DL again, but it did have to go through that fairly lengthy pre-first reboot phase again as well as the full 30-minute install phase, as expected.

Hi rseiler :) Fancy seeing you here, fellow VirtualBox'er!

Anyway, I too am glad that the build rollback was easy, and that it didn't have to redownload. Also, I noticed the watermark is gone in this build - fun fun - I consider it a release candidate :)
