Xbox One - Ideas for the Future (Modding) [Revised]

In my opinion the best part about PC games is the modding community and I wanted to see about what everyone else thinks in regards to modding being possible or just a good idea for the Xbox One. I know that Microsoft mentioned something about XB1 possibly being able to be used as a DevKit, and I'm not sure if that if that will help in those regards, but give me your opinion on the matter. I was thinking that users could create content for games and publish on the live marketplace and make it available for an easy download... much like Steam does for the PC. Of course things would have to be regulated but its just an idea. So does anybody think this is a good idea, do you think this is what Microsoft might be aiming for in the future, and is this even possible? Let me know your thoughts on the matter. And sorry about my massive other thread by the similar other name. The format was messed up and I got carried away typing, but if you want to read the more detailed version that I wrote before, feel free, haha. Thanks all.

Usually when talking about mods on consoles, it usually means something different than when you mention mods regarding PCs.  With that said, I would like to see some of the mods like what people do on the PC version of Skyrim for example, come to the X1.  Whether or not it will happen has yet to be seen, but I think the community should have a place where they can "mod" their game and have other xbl users download the mod if they so chose.  It adds to the game.

.

I also see MS's side of the equation.  This is just a theory on my part, but Mods could be used maliciously over xbl if there isn't someone monitoring what is being posted for the community to use.  Still I think MS is looking at doing this, after all Project Spark will let you save what you created and share with the community.  So who knows.  Maybe they will start allowing mods as well.

We already have mods for console games - it's called DLC. ;)

I was thinking more in terms of your average user creating content. With DLC, only the person who has made the game can put out DLC (for the most part). If I wanted to make a mod like Tekkit, DayZ, or Gary's Mod for the games that I love I would have to do it on the PC because you haven't been able to do it on consoles so far. ... There is a whole modding community which consoles have yet to touch. Consoles need to make it so the average poor college student like me can create mods for the games that I love, haha.

Wrong, mods that change gameplay and not just the looks dont need to go anywhere near the closed console systems...i think the WORST part about PC gaming is the fact that every noob goes into a game looking for mods/cheats because they dont want to take the time to get real skills at playing the game...f mods. Dont need em anywhere near the X1.

There are all kind of mods, 6 FT. Take a quick browse through some of the thousands of mods available for Skyrim and tell me you wouldn't want to try a few out:

When it comes to user-created mods, I'm only for it as long as it is fair (as in doesn't allow people to cheat or gain a particular advantage). It will also have to be of a very high quality (as in professional developer quality) & not some partial mish-mash of content or bug-ridden filth that could potentially break or ruin the game. For these reasons (& many more besides), I think that in order for it to work it will have to be heavily regulated & many imaginative people aren't going to like that. But then again, who's to say someone couldn't build a back-door and enter into dangerous modder territory similar to GTA's coffee mod? That in turn will likely make it costly to do (as in not free), which means that someone will have to pay for it. Whether it will be said people with imagination, us as the consumers, or Microsoft willing to absorb the costs (of which I doubt they'll be willing to do), I don't know. At this point, though, you're practically a developer in your own right, which makes the whole thing kind of counter-intuitive. It's kind of like when Microsoft changed its views on games - they're no longer saying that this is a disc-based game, a game on demand, an arcade game, or an Indy game - to them, a game's a game is a game... I think when it comes to user-made mods, it should probably be viewed the same way. I suppose people could continue modding on the PC to show they have the chops & then share their work with the console community to be released as a stand-alone DLC that is supported by & has the blessing of both the developer and publisher of whatever game was modified, but that's highly unlikely & largely dependent on the individual companies. But if it becomes a possibility, the door will be wide open for new developers, which can only be a good thing for us in the end.

We'll just have to wait & see if it's ever allowed & find out what happens if & when it does....

You will never see a pc level mod community on console because that would hurt the revenue of all the crappy dlc that companies put out. It would also hurt the revenue gained for charging you for "dlc" that is on the disc already

Galactic Geek ----> Yeah... I agree, there are a couple of things that have to be worked around but like you said... if it doesn't interfere in multiplayer games by giving an unfair advantage (or if it does and all the users give consent) then I think it would be a good idea. I don't even think that would be a problem because the only way that you could play the mod is if the person that you are playing has it too... so consent is already provided. And with a short process like maybe having to send it in to a board on Microsoft.... Microsoft will allow them to publish it and thats how it can be regulated. And if the process is made easy and accessible enough there won't be a need to charge a ridiculous amount of money for your creations. I think if they emulate how the PC modding system works as best as they can, all of this can be possible. ... And even if it does cost money... I would throw down $10 even $20 bucks in a heartbeat for some of the better Skyrim mods, Tekkit, DayZ, Gary's Mod, The Hidden, etc etc... I feel like many other people are with me on this too haha.

Modding is against the TOS and COC of Xbox. As it should remain so.  Just because a few people have good intentions with it, to allow it will give way to those who do not. And I do not want Xbox Live trashed by that anymore than it already has been at times in the past.
