How much internet data does live use per month?

Hi there!  To be honest, it can be pretty wildly variant depending on what you're playing and what modes.  We don't really have official numbers, though if I had to guess I'd say you'd get some but not a ton of gaming in on those limits.  I would say to test, maybe run it through a bridged connection with your PC while tracking the data usage

If you download Games on Demand, XBLA etc. Netflix, Amazon Instant all add up too.

I'm with Comcast too and they haven't removed the unlimited yet.

I have 3 PC's, 2 Xbox 360's, lots of movie streaming from Amazon and more and I don't use over 300GB. So either you use it for more than you outline or someone in your house is. Is your Wifi secure? No neighbours grabbing your Internet connection? :)

Well, it depends how often and how long you play the games. In a previous thread, I did route the traffic for a Live multiplayer match for a few minutes through my PC and captured the data.

During Multiplayer matches VERY SMALL data packets (approximately a hundred bytes or 0.1-0.2 MB per packet) are sent around, as the multiplayer data should travel quickly through even the slowest lines to your opponents or teammates.

From my capture playing Battlefield 1943 I averaged to about 1,5 to 2 MB per hour. So even if you play multiplayer around the clock every day for a month (30 days), you should just about pass one Gigabyte.

However I didn't play other games and haven't captured GTA Online yet. So this is just an estimate. But even if I double the numbers, you should never reach the amount of 300 GB only by Multiplayer and MMO gametime.

However, keep in mind that depending on the game you play, the MMO Game Client often updates the Client and might download a lot of data before getting you in the game.

Additionally, keep in mind that Windows Machines pull Windows Update patches automatically depending on your setting without you doing anything. And in the case of Windows 8 your machines might have downloaded the 8.1 update which is several Gigabytes large.

And finally: Check the settings of your router. Some models can be set up for flat rate plans with no limit, time metered connections and data metered connections, and sometimes these routers keep a journal with the amount of data transferred or how long the router was connected to the internet.

See if you can set your router to a data metered connection limited to 300 GB and see if the router keeps a journal of your data usage. That way you might have a comparison to the claims of your ISP (however, keep in mind that these journals are just an estimate).

@Baza They did away with unlimited in my area (TN). We called them to verify.

And no Im not streaming Netflix or anything else on my Xbox. I just game.

My router is secure. I checked it to see which devices have ever connected to it and I didnt see any I didnt recognize.  Its a fairly new neighborhood and theres a few other secure networks in range so Im assuming most if not all of everyone has their own connection.

The only other person that uses the net is my mom but she rarely uses it and just uses it for facebook or to look at something real fast.

So yea, not sure where all this usage is coming from.

A lot of the internet companies are doing this.

ATT caps at 150 G for their regular DSL and 250 G for Uverse internet.

At first the only thing my internet was used for was gaming and a little surfing but never had a problem. Then we got 3 Rokus (streaming devices) and I started hitting the 150 G cap. On any given day there was 3 different movies streaming on 3 different tvs. I have since switched to Uverse internet and have not had a problem. Atleast they haven't set me an email saying I was reaching my cap like before. I am not sure about MMOs but it is hard for me to believe that if you are only using internet for XBL and MMOs that you are pulling 300G. We had 3 different streaming devices, XBL, surfing, and misc stuff and was hitting about 200G a month or so.

Yeah. I am eith virgin. Wish xbox live had a built in app to measure data use.

you can use for your tablet. Only want to pay £10 a month but that would  only get you 2Gb a month.

I know that cod black ops two is one of the highest online data users as far as xbl is concerned. Don't know about GTA. COD can pull as much as 30 to 40 mb an hour.  At 50 mb/h at 10 hours a day is still only 1 gig a day up to 31 gig a month. If your going through 300g a month and only playing xbl you need to change your router passwords and call your provider and try and find out what is eating your data.  Good luck to you.

WhiteBoi the same thing happened to me. I aswell played GtA V and some other games. We reached the Comcast cap that's 300gigs (we live in AZ). I believe that gta may eat the Internet up because this has never happened before. For is though my brother seemed to stream a bit. I still think it's gta v. The new update now was some gigs and also I feel the game would take up lots of data depending on what other players are doing. It has a large map where things can be done and a lot of the time I feel like whenever someone will do something in an area. I don't know if you were playing when the infection of the crates I front of Eclipse Towers. I think all those crates may have sent LOTS of packets and eaten up Internet too as a lot of the time there would be 300-400 crates therez
