Does anyone else have issues with the Blu Ray playback quality, I think mine is really grainy and a step down from my standalone Blu Ray player, I was going to do away with it and just use the XBO but not so sure now? Or is it my imagination?? Also in the Blu Ray settings there is a check box for 24hz can anyone explain what that is please?

I'm not sure what it is but I know that box should be checked. The Blu Ray app does have some sound issues with lip sync being out on 24hz so will no doubt be patched at some point.

genchy, there are lots of setting under video to do with colour depth etc that will affect the brightness, contrast etc of the picture. Try out some of the other options to see if you can improve the picture quality. (I think there is a calibrate option that will take you through the settings to get the best picture on your TV)
As for 24 hz, that is to do with movie playback. TV Video is faster at either 50hz or 60hz (frames per second) where movie projectors run at 24 frames per second. 24 into 50 or 60 dosen't go so you have to do some tricks to make it play. If your TV can take the 24hz signal then setting to this should give better results for films shot for the cinema.

Yes, it is a step-down in quality, though making adjustments can help. But then, it's an in-built blu-ray player so the quality was never going to be quite as a good as a standalone, dedicated player. My blu-ray player is worth £100 (managed to snag it for £50 during a sale) and the picture quality is considerably better than what the Xbox One can produce, although it's worth noting I'm a bit of a movie nutter and a lot of people probably won't even notice the difference.

Still, it's a good way of people getting on-board with blu-ray films and the like.

I'll be continuing to use my stand-alone player :)

Not at Blue Ray film prices.
DVD player seems to be a better picture than the XBox 360 as the ONE and 360 are both still plugged into the telly and I've seen the difference.

A fair point, there. The prices of blu-rays are still much higher than DVDs, and vary pretty wildly. I can pick up Man of Steel on blu-ray for £12 and the DVD for £10, meanwhile another title is priced at £18 for the blu-ray. Crazy.
