MSVCP71.dll

Hello.  I've had a laptop for about 2 years with Vista OEM version. Out of the blue, per discussions with AOL, I now have an AOL 9.0 / Vista incompatibility issue -- AOL being no help and pointing the finger to Microsoft saying that I need resolution through Microsoft that the problem may be due to a Windows update installation. What happens is that I go to my AOL desktop icon, click on it, and, instead of AOL successfully launching into a sign-in screen, I now get a message box for waol.exe - unable to locate component that states "This application has failed to start becuase MSVCP71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." If I go through Internet Explorer and get into AOL that way, it is just a matter of time before I get an error message that AOL software stopped working and I end up having to Ctrl-Alt-Del to get out of the things I was working on, because the error message keeps popping up so quickly I don't have a second to x out of the error box and close the program. Any have any suggestions where I won't lose my files, emails, archives, etc. to fix this horrible problem?  Thanks.

Hi Meinert,

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Answers Community Forums.

Msvcp71.dll is a Microsoft C Runtime library and it is required to run several Microsoft and non-Microsoft applications on a Windows system.

1. Reinstall the application that is causing the problem.
If you are receiving the DLL error while running a program or an application, then it is quite possible that there is something wrong with the installation files of this application. In order to fix the error, first try to uninstall and reinstall AOL application. While doing this, ensure that there is no problem with the setup files from which you are going to install.

2. Download the DLL from the Internet or copy it from another PC with same configuration as your PC and register the file on the system:

If the error does not go away even after you have reinstalled the application causing the error, then download the DLL file from the Internet or copy it from another computer with same configuration as yours to the directory of the program that requires the file.
Note: You may also copy the file to the C”\\Windows\System32\dllcache folder.

If required, register the DLL file by performing the following steps:

1. Click Start and in the start search box type CMD
2. Right click on CMD in the list and click on 'Run as Administrator'
3. Type the following command and press Enter. Regsvr32 msvcp71.dll
4. Exit the Command Prompt window.

3. Run System File Checker (SFC) :

The SFC command is used to detect and fix problems with the protected files on the Windows XP and Windows Vista computers. This command helps in initiating the Windows File Protection Service and enables you to scan all Windows protected files for their integrity and replace any problematic files that are identified.

1. Click Start and in the start search box type CMD
2. Right click on CMD in the list and click on 'Run as Administrator'
3. Type the following command and press Enter. Sfc /scannow
4. Exit the Command Prompt window.

4. Update your Windows system.

DLL errors also occur due to the existence of obsolete and invalid files on the system. This is the reason why it is important for you to keep your PC updated with the latest Windows updates. These updates not only help you in enhancing the performance of your PC, but also enable you to strengthen the security of your Windows computer and prevent several computer errors.

Hope it helps.

Srinivas

I am glad someone esle has a similar problem. It is very difficult to find good answers to these kind of problems, and I appreciate your info. I followed your instructions for both regitering the dll and scanning the registry. Neither one of these fixed my problem. After the scan the computer said that there were still corrupt files it could not fix. I downloaded the file from the internet but I guess access to the directory is blocked because windows would not let me replace the file. I get the unable to locate component error at the start up of my computer on all users. Here is my error report. I hope this is fixable.

I feel that telling us to reload applications that have worked for a year without failure, is a cop-out!  It was only after Windows did an automatic update that I began experiencing this problem.  It's not only with AOL, it's also with my Webroot Spy Sweeper and Anti-virus programs.  There's almost nothing I can do with software NOT made by Microsoft without experiencing this problem.  I've tried reloading AOL from the Web and while beginning the installation, I get the same error yet again.  Come up with a real fix please!  I'm beginning to have some understanding and acceptance for people who choose the Mac platform over Windows.  That's pretty bad!

Let us re-open this issue. I have had to reinstall XP64 on a system, and after a full format, and reload, I have fully updated all files from MS Update. .NET 4.0, and all updates also loaded. I am now receiving errors that msvcp71.dll is not installed when using a few applications. I have performed the registry scan, and allowed the original media to be used for the scan. msvcp71.dll still does not exist on the system, and therefore attempting to run regsrv32 on that target fails. Are there any other options available to resolve this issue? None of the solutions presented on this site with msvcp71 or msvcr71 files appear to be operative.

Same issue.  When the Desk Top displays at boot up I receive msg. that True Image cannot start because Msvcp71.dll is missing.  However, that file is NOT missing!  True Image support advised that this is a Microsoft problem and suggested contacting their support. Ha - good luck getting help from Microsoft!

I had a similair problem on a Windows XP SP3 system. A 3rd party application (Wikidpad) would prompt for the MSVCP71.dll file.  This file is for MS Visual C runtime libraries.

After attempting all the reinstall, scan files, MS updater, etc to no avail I was able to fix this by copying the file from a different application directory (for me - Photoshop) into the problem app's directory.   I didn't even need to copy to system32 nor update the registry but that would have been the next step.  ( A typical search for required files/drivers would include the install directory and the system files.)

So here would be my recommendation for future users:  search your system for the file and copy it into the problem app's folder.  There very well could be a copy on your system already (it's better than download roulette).  Microsoft files always has their info in the file properties so you can verify that it is a Windows file.  Since you are already using this file elsewhere the risk is minimal.

To hazard a guess as to cause, the developer of my 3rd party application assumed a certain configuration of Windows which already had this installed.

This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. This error occurs when the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) on the Easysoft ODBC-JDBC Gateway machine cannot find the msvcr71.dll file. This can cause the JVM to crash, which then crashes the ODBC-JDBC Gateway and the ODBC Data Source Administrator.

To resolve this issue, find the path to the folder where msvcr71.dll is located on the Easysoft ODBC-JDBC Gateway machine. This file is usually located in the bin subfolder of the jre<n> folder. For example:

<drive>:\Program Files\Java\jre6\binWhen you have the msvcr71.dll folder path, add it to the Path environment variable value:

Updating the Path on Windows 2000, XP and 2003
1.In Control Panel, double-click System. In the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.
2.In the System variables list, highlight Path, and the click Edit.
3.In the Variable value box, add the msvcr71.dll folder path to the list of paths.
Use a semi-colon (;) to separate the msvcr71.dll folder path from the existing list of paths.

Updating the Path on Windows Vista and 7
1.Do one of the following:
?On Windows Vista, in Control Panel, double-click System.
?On Windows 7, in Control Panel, click System and Security.
2.Click Advanced System Settings.
3.Click Environment Variables.
4.In the System variables list, highlight Path, and the click Edit.
5.In the Variable value box, add the msvcr71.dll folder path to the list of paths.
Use a semi-colon (;) to separate the msvcr71.dll folder path from the existing list of paths.

Path In XP:----C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Desktop\sqldeveloper-3.2.20.09.87\sqldeveloper\jdk\jre\bin
