windows 8 control panel and search crash explorer

After recently upgrading from win 7 home to win 8 pro, Every time I search something on the windows metro interface or open control panel in desktop mode, explorer.exe resets itself without producing any error message. As a result, i cannot access control panel or use the windows search feature. I have tried every single "solution" to this problem out there and nothing has fixed it.
Indexing was reset and is now complete, i have tried sfc /scannow and no errors were detected, all windows updates have been installed/ reinstalled, and all device drivers are up to date. When using explorer to browse files and directories in desktop mode, it works fine. What is causing the search and control panel crashes?

The problem appears to be the IDTNC64.cpl:

P4: IDTNC64.cpl
P5: 1.0.6345.0

The IDTNC64.cpl is a component of IDT audio so try uninstalling the IDT audio driver and then reinstall the IDT audio driver using the latest version available.

I have uninstalled IDT audio drivers but the problem still persists, but now the event viewer indicates:

is there any way to disable verifier.dll from running when explorer is opened? or how else can i fix this issue without having to do a refresh? (I do not want to re-install all of my programs as a result of PC refresh since i have dozens of valuable programs and I have lost the install disk for some of them.)

(I also uninstalled motorola bluetooth drivers since they are not needed anymore)

What I might suggest is to try to capture a user-mode dump file of the explorer crash to get more information on the crash and see if perhaps a third party file is actually causing the crash.

You can configure Windows to create user-mode dumps. Create a System Restore Point first.

If you copy and paste the following in Notepad and save as a .reg file, then right-click the .reg file and select "Merge" to add to the registry, a .dmp file at the time explorer.exe crashes should be created in the C:\CrashDumps folder:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\explorer.exe]
"DumpFolder"=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,43,00,72,00,61,00,73,00,68,00,44,00,75,\
00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00

After  Explorer (explorer.exe) crashes, can you then make the .dmp file available (provide link) via Windows Live SkyDrive or similar site?

The following link has information on using Windows Live SkyDrive:

Ok, here is the dump file: http://sdrv.ms/VDqPEU
what seems to be the issue? I couldn't seem to find the issue within the dump file.

The problem may be a problematic shell extension, in particular the ShellExt64.dll:

*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for GROOVEEX.DLL
Probably caused by : verifier.dll ( verifier!VerifierStopMessage+1fc )

The ShellExt64.dll is a component of HP Cloud Drive:

Loaded symbol image file: ShellExt64.dll
    Image path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\HP CloudDrive\ShellExt64.dll
    Image name: ShellExt64.dll
    Timestamp:        Fri Dec 10 21:32:45 2010 (4D02E2CD)
    CheckSum:         00000000
    ImageSize:        0022F000
    File version:     0.9.1.0
    Product version:  0.9.1.0

Are you using the CloudDrive software?

In any event can you uninstall the CloudDrive software and see if the error resolves.

Afterward you can reinstall the CloudDrive software using the latest version available.

If the error persists after uninstalling the CloudDrive software I would suggest to use ShellExView to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to try to find out if there is a problematic one.

The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm

You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.

Also, did you happen to install the "Application Verifier"?

The problem still persisted with shellext64.dll removed, but I solved the problem by removing hccutils.dll !!!!!!!!!!!!! Not a single explorer crash so far after removing hccutils.dll, which is part of the Intel common user interface. If anyone else out there has upgraded their computer from win7 to win8 and has switchable graphics on an hp laptop (In my case, ati 6770m and intel 3000), i would recommend removing hccutils.dll if you are experiencing explorer crashes.

Thank you for your help!

You're welcome.

Glad you found the problem and thanks for the follow-up.

You can delete the C:\CrashDumps folder anytime.

You can leave the added registry key intact but you can delete it if you wish or run the following .reg file to delete:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\explorer.exe]
