Hi Venkatesh,

Thank you for choosing Windows 8 and posting your query on Microsoft Community Forums. We are here to assist you with all your Windows related issues.

As per your issues description, it seems that you are unable to download Java on your Windows 8 computer and you are getting the error message: “Unable to download ....xml for installation” and when you close the error, you get another error: “Download failed”. I would like to ask you a few questions regarding this issue.

1.       Are you trying to install the updates for the Java software which is already installed on your computer or is this a fresh installation of the Java software on your computer?

2.       Are you using any proxy settings on your computer to connect to the Internet?

3.       Do you have a third party security program installed on your computer?

4.       How are you trying to install Java? Is it using the Online Java Installer?

This error usually happens when you are using a proxy setting to connect to the Internet. It might also be due to the conflicts from a third party security program. I would suggest you to perform the following methods and check if that resolve the issue.

Method 1: Disable the Proxy Settings.

If this is the first time, you are trying to install Java on your Windows 8 computer, then follow these steps to disable the proxy settings.

a)       Press “Windows Logo” + “R”, type “inetcpl.cpl” and press “Enter”.

b)       Click the “Connections” tab, and then click “LAN settings”.

c)       Uncheck the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” check box.

d)       Click “Ok”.

After disabling the proxy settings, try downloading and installing Java and check if that help.

If you are getting this error while trying to install the updates for Java software which is already installed on your computer, then I would suggest you to configure proxies through the Java Control Panel and check if that work. For this, you may refer the article: “Configure Proxies through the Java Control Panel” from this link:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/proxy_setup.xml

If the above method did not work, then I would suggest you to proceed with the next method to temporarily disable the third party security program, if you have installed one on your computer.

Method 2: Temporarily disable the third party security program (If you have installed any).

If you have installed a third party security program, then I request you to contact its technical support to temporarily disable the program and then try downloading and installing Java and check the issue.

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

If you are using the online Java installer, then I would suggest you to try the offline installer package and check if that works. Often the offline package will install successfully while the online installer package encounters a problem.

Method 3: Try Offline Installation of Java.

I would suggest you to download the offline installer package from the given link and then install it successfully. The link for downloading the Java Offline installer package is:

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_offline.jsp

For more information, you may also refer the article: “Download and Installing Java” from this link:

As a reference, you may also check this link for other download errors with Java:

This should resolve the issue. If you still face the same issue, then I would suggest you to get back to us with the results of these troubleshooting methods and with all the additional information regarding the issue.
