After my starting my computer the resolution either starts off at 1024 by 768 or will change to such at the log in window. The computer in question is an Alienware M17x laptop with a native display resolution of 1440 by 900. Operating system is an upgrade
from Vista rather than a clean install and the problem only started after the upgrade.
Changing the resolution once logged in will change it but only until the computer is shut down and it gets tiresome having to fix it multiple times in a day.
Does not occur after simply logging out or hibernating/sleep/standby only after a shutdown or restart.
Is there any way to set it to start up with a resolution of 1440x900?

Did you make any hardware or a software change to your computer recently, after installing windows 7?
You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the Display adapter drivers:
Uninstall and reinstall the Graphics adapter:
1. Go to Start and right-click on Computers and select Manage. This will bring the Computer Management window, now on the left sidebar select Device Manager.
2. Then go to Display Adapters and right click on it's name and click on uninstall.
To reinstall the drivers right click on your card’s name and finally click Update Driver Software
3. You have two options here, click the option that reads "search automatically for updated driver software".
