Windows 10 Setup stuck at "Getting updates"

Hi!

Today i try to upgrade my Windows 10 from Windows 7.

The problem is that upgrading  stuck at "Getting Update"s for 30 min.

I though that was a problem with setup so i stop it and clear a  folder in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

and try to use a "MediaCreationToolx64". Everything was fine, after waiting couple of minutes i go for next step but after this one again i got message that Windows 10 Setup is checking for updates...

I hear that in MediaCreationTool installation is without updates, and i watch lots of videos at YouTube where nobody have this step after using MediaCreationTool. I'm still waiting next 20 minutes on this step.

This is my second Windows upgrade, but i havent problem like this before.

Close it then do the following:

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

Restart then try again. If that does not work, try upgrading manually:

Pre-requisite Task

When making significant changes to your computer such as updating the operating system, you should always backup. See links to resources about backing up by clicking the link for the respective version of Windows you are running: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1

then

then

  • Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
  • Restart a few times then try again.
  • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
  • If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
  • Perform a clean boot, restart then try again.
  • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.
  • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.
  • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
  • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account.
  • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

Best,
Andre

This is not my idea.  I read it elsewhere in one of the postings.  Not sure where.  But it works.  You need to go into Services and STOP Microsoft Update.  It is trying to run at the same time that Getting Updates is trying to get additional downloads.  So, there is a deadlock between the two applications running at the same time.  By STOPPING Microsoft Update, it kills the deadlock and allows the Getting Updates of the Windows 10 installation to complete, in a matter of seconds or minutes depending on where you are.  There are other posts that talk about this and it definitely solved my problem and I was able to get a successful installation after the Windows 10 install completed.  It takes roughly 1-2 hours to complete.  You may have to STOP Microsoft Update several times during this stage of the installation.  Because once you STOP it, it will try to restart the service.  So, you may have to do this a couple of times in the Services.

Thanks Bob, this worked for me. My update was stuck on "Checking for updates" with not even a percentage value and stopping the "Windows Update" service unblocked it for me and it progressed.
