Windows 10 crashes & failure of update KB3194496 (error code (0x80073712)

Umm, first, it is not stuck on the "Preparing Windows" screen.  From the Windows update screen, I get the message "Failed to Install" with the error code (0x80073712).  The computer does not attempt to restart after this failure.  It just got much better after the first failure (leading me to think that it really or mostly did install).  Windows keeps telling me that there is no earlier restore point, and if there were, wouldn't that take me back to the point where my computer would not reliably stay up?  At this point, if it crashes, I can get to the boot options and run the hardware diagnostics (which will show some errors), after which, the computer comes up... and stays up until I shut it down.  Obviously, the system itself is creating the problem; either it is overwriting part of vital system code, or some component which has authority to do so is wiping out something vital.  And F8 is not one of the options listed on my boot screen; just F2 & F12.

Please try to perform a clean boot on your computer. This means starting Windows by using minimal drivers and startup programs. It will help against software conflicts that may happen when you install a program or an update. Please check out this link for steps in performing a clean boot.

Once you are in the clean boot mode, go to the What is next when I have a clean boot environment? section of the same article that we gave, and follow the troubleshooting instructions.

After you finish troubleshooting, you can start the computer normally again by following the procedures on the How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting section of the same web page.

JohnRod Nav, well, normally my startup is very clean.  I keep all the possible non-Windows startup items disabled.  I just went and disabled a few that tend to crop whenever I update some software (like iTunes).  I don't believe this has made any difference, except that so far I have had only one crash this morning.  Perhaps that was because I did the clean boot restart while Windows Update was making its second try at installing KB3194496.  I have run the TroubleShooter on Windows Update and it fixed two problems and informs me that the Windows Update database is corrupted.  The update fails on updating the Windows Store app.  I think I will now go mark my wi-fi as metered to stop Windows Update from downloading & attempting to install this update.  It tried eight times yesterday!  And crashed every one.  When I see that Windows has issued a new "cumulative update" (aka "break a variety of things all at once" package) I will invoke the update by hand.  thank you for your help.

Good afternoon!  Please note the return code: 0x80073712.  I have done SFC and DISM, both show no problems, nothing to fix.  I ran the TroubleShooter for Windows Update.  It showed four problems and fixed three (Reset security settings, Reset service registration, Repair Windows Update components).  The item it did not fix is: Potential Windows Update Database Corruption.  Under Issues found, It listed the above three items as "fixed" and "completed" followed by check-marks.  And the Potential W.U. Database Corruption as "Not fixed" followed by an X-mark.  Potential issues that were checked covered three items, all were listed as "Issue not present".  The next page included the Detection details which were abstruse and included the various package versions. 

  Now, the Event Viewer has some information, too.

Same problem, same result, only as part of my troubleshooting efforts I tried upgrading to W10 pro, but with the same result. Am now at the point of contemplating a clean install, only if I do that--it seems that my chances of the same update crashing my system again is pretty high.

The one difference is my build, which is 14393.0

Not attempting the database correction as my connection IS metered and I have already incurred over $50 of charges because of this issue, not to speak of maxing out my sizeable home data package.

The Anniversary Update screwed up my computer.  Changing application literally requires more than a minute to have it response.  This is on a blazing fast pc with 4 SSDs in a RAID 0.  This update screwed up my computer.

I have never used Xbox nor was I part of the Insider FanBoy club.  I uninstalled the Anniversary edition and reinstalled.  Worked fine until I shutdown and rebooted today.  The same screw-up again and it all started with a black screen.  WTH?

So again we have Windows updates (security) that are worse than any damn virus.

The guys at work curse MS and their "programmers" several times a day.

Yes.  Umm, my BSODs continue.  Today I got "PFN LIST CORRUPT" which I understand - the poor computer cannot tell where Windows 10 put anything!  With careful coaxing through the "Preparing Automatic Repair" and "Diagnosing Your PC" and various re-boots, I get the machine up and working. And this keeps happening.  If I run hardware diagnostics right after a crash, I get error codes which indicate the RAM is failing; if I run them after doing a restart while the machine has been up for a while, they indicate no problems.  These problems started the very next day after the anniversary update.  What would you think?  That Windows 10 is trying its best to damage the computer??!?  The event log shows a slew of Task Definition errors combined with messages such as "The previous crash was unexpected" and "No definition could be found for this event".

Of course, the "Answer Desk" suggests the same actions that I have already taken.

I have these additional questions:  Should I make a good effort to uninstall the anniversary edition update?  What are the chances of that being successful?  The only "fresh install" method seems to be from a boot keyfob (which I created), but this computer will not boot from keyfob, so how would I go about doing a fresh install?  Is it at all possible to go back to Windows 7?  (Perhaps I could do a fresh install from there?)

Just to let everyone know, the situation continues much as it has since the anniversary edition.  I turn off the power to the computer for say, 12 hours, then boot up.  It goes through various black screens, etc. and comes up (eventually) then crashes within 3 minutes.  I coax it through the reboot process and if I stop to perform the hardware diagnostics, that returns a 2000-0123 code (meaning memory integrity problem).  I then persuade the computer to come up ... and it stays up.  If I do a restart during this up-time and go to the hardware diagnostics, it then indicates that there is no problem, the memory is fine.  If I sleep the computer and then bring it up, it will crash (just a black screen, no message, nada) within a few minutes.

   This morning after this lengthy process, I got a new message - "Microsoft Account.  You need to fix your Microsoft Account for apps on your other devices to be able to launch apps and continue experiences on this device."   SAY WHAT?!?  I have no other "devices".  In the Settings, I turned off all the options pertaining thereto, but clicking on that message took me to the Settings screen which showed that WI-FI communication "with other devices" was turned on.  ??!?  I turned that off, and the computer promptly crashed with a Registry Error message.  It came slowly back up and is still functional.  I think there is a major flaw in Windows 10 by which the OS is poking itself in the eye.
