Since the last update (Sept.), my Dell StudioD 540S (Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q8200 (2.33 GHz 1333MHz FSB), w/4MBcache; 6GB 800MHZ DDR2 4DIMM memory; 640GB 7200RPM SERIAL hard drive) has been crashing at various intervals. Sometimes it stays up several hours, sometimes only minutes. Crashes are followed by error messages KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE, ACPI BIOS ERROR, SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION, CRITICAL INITIALIZATION FAILURE and sometimes IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL. The self-recovery processes seem to fail - Preparing Automatic Repair often results in a black screen saying only that, without the drive light, sometimes with the drive light and the num lock flashing on and off. Oddly, after running the built-in diagnostics, I have better success. My dump files, msinfo and a screen-shot of the failure of the current upgrade are available via Onedrive at: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AsfsxlV5PnWSc0LpBeQKqy9ZG0Q. Since I ran diagnostics this afternoon, my computer has stayed up for (gasp!) a whole two hours. I cannot be sure if this is a new trend, however, the screen in Thunderbird is completely whacked and some other things look odd, too. If anyone can give me some idea what happened with that September update, I would love to know what is going on here. muchas gracias for any help/info.

October 1: Well. Are we having fun yet? While KB3194496 was failing to install, things started changing all over. First, I did a retry of the update which failed again. Winver now shows that my computer is running Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.187) --- AND IT HAS NOT CRASHED --- yet. The screens for most functions (SETTINGS, etc.) are different; the big green "settings screen" with the gearwheel does not appear at all, for instance. Also, the giant icons for the settings are gone, replaced by a list-type display. Hello?!? My file Explorer screen is different (again) and the various folders and libraries have been renamed (again) (what is with this My Ebooks, My Pictures, etc. Whose else would they be for crying out loud?) Now I have another question: How do I simplify the Explorer screen? It is a mess. And I am becoming even more crabby!
Oct.4. Okay, the KB3194496 fails with return code (0x80073712) and a message that some files are missing or damaged. Research has shown me that this refers to Windows Update Files. I got into Troubleshooting, System and Security, Fix problems
with Windows Update. This showed three problems and corrected two of them; the LIST still seems to be a problem. I then ran DISM (from Admin command window as DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scahealth) which returned the message: No component store corruption
detected. The operation completed successfully. Obviously, the Windows Update list component has an undetectable error. Winver shows my computer at Build 14393,187, so even though somethings were updated by KB314496, not everything was. I still get crashes
usually twice after first booting up, after that, it stays up well, except after sleeping when it is apt to crash again. sigh.
