Hi Melody,

What version of windows are you running? Click start, and type “winver” and hit enter, a box should pop up. 1709? 1803?

And what’s the make and model of your PC? We may need just need a driver update.

Let me know!

Hi Melody. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Are you getting any error? How does it fail exactly when you try to read it?

Right click Start button to open Disk Management, scroll down to find the card drive, does it have a letter? If not right click to assign a letter so it can be read.

If it's not that run the Hardware troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot

Right click Start to open the Device Manager, choose View tab to Show Hidden Devices, find the SD card reader device, right click to Uninstall driver. Restart PC to reinstall driver.

If nothing above works, can the card be read in another PC? Can it read another card? Report back results for all steps.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Ok, so it’s an “older” laptop. It doesn’t have drivers for anything after win 7, but it’s possible we could still get this fixed.

First, I’d keep moving forward and try to update to 1803 - Settings - Updates and Security - Updates - it should be sitting there waiting for you. It’s possible the update will remedy the issue.

If no dice, click start - type “device manager” open it

Expand “memory technology devices” and “disk drives” and see if we have anything weird in there, yellow exclamation points? Right click if so, and try to update the driver.

Let me know how you make out and we’ll go from there!

Ok, click start and type “control panel” - within the you should be able to get to device manager.

Alternatively, you can try to right click on the start button, see if device manager or control panel is there on the list.
