Windows firewall blocked apps on windows 10

Original title:Windows 10 Firewall

Every time I boot up my computer I get pop up from Windows Firewall that some features have been blocked for the same apps: Chrome, Steam, and any steam game that I boot up.

If I look under the firewall settings I can see that these apps have been allowed permissions and the apps seem to function normally if I for example just close the window but its very frustrating as it can interrupt my sessions (pop-up during a game) and I need to make the pop-ups go away every time I boot up computer.

I will attach a picture for reference, any ideas or tips, I haven't others post about this issue so not sure what to do besides going nuclear and doing a fresh install as I would prefer to have the firewall on.

Hello,

I have the same issue and it just started days ago. It happens with both Windows 7 and 10 with the latest updates. I honestly think it's something related to updates.

Anyway, I tried your solution, and executed the program in the first link twice, it detects the same issue even after correcting it. We're still at it: the firewall forgets the new settings.

Screenshot:

I also tried turning the firewall off and on again, nothing changes.

Even when allowing a specific app through the firewall manually, when I go back to the settings, I don't find that app.

It happens to me with the Spotify app, the Steam app, and with games such us Pro Evolution Soccer.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing the details.

I suggest you to follow the methods below and check if it helps:

Method 1:

Perform Virus Scan in Safe Mode with Networking:

Note: Some of viruses are unable to detect in Normal mode. So I suggest you to perform “Virus can in Safe mode with Networking” and then check.

Step 1:

Start the computer in “Safe mode with networking mode”, to start the computer with minimal set of drivers and files and also includes the network drivers and services needed to access the Internet or other computers on your network. You may follow the article below and check if it helps:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Step 2: Perform Virus Scan:

Disclaimer for Virus scan: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

  1. The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

   2. Restart the computer to see whether the problem goes away.

Method 2: Disable or uninstall Third party Windows Firewall program and then check.

Disclaimer to disable Firewall: You should not turn off Windows Firewall unless you have another firewall enabled. Turning off Windows Firewall might make your computer (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to damage from worms or hackers.

Note: Once you performed the steps, make sure you ‘Turn on the Firewall’ and re-enable the antivirus to avoid the risk of virus infection.

Method 3:

I also suggest you to to uninstall and reinstall the updates and check if it helps. You may follow the step below.

1. Press Windows key + R to open the run command.

2. Type appwiz.cpl and press enter to open programs and features.

3. On the left pane, click "view installed updates".

4. Here, the update that you have installed will be located.'

5. To uninstall, right click on it and select "uninstall".

6. Once it is uninstalled, proceed with the installation.

If the issue persists, post your reply with results and the questions asked as above. We are happy to assist you further with advanced troubleshooting steps!

Hope it helps.

I am also receiving a similar alert, but when I go to check my Windows 10 FireWall settings I see a message that these settings are being controlled by my Norton product. What should I do with these Windows pop ups and what action do I have to take to stop seeing them, yet ensure that I am being fully protected?

It's an issue with your VPN. Maybe you've installed a VPN program like Tunnelbear, Hotspot Shield or maybe a Chrome/Firefox VPN extension. Whatever the case maybe, you need to find a list of your network adapters by going to device manager. From there, try to disable one adapter aft another. In my case, it was an adapter called "WAN Miniport IKEv2" that was causing the problem. I disabled it and fixed it. Very frustrating problem. But I'm glad I worked it out. Whew!

It didn't work for me I disabled every adapter starts with "WAN Miniport xxx" but somehow the firewall alert shows again. Then I tried restarting my laptop and when I opened device manager all the adapter (which i disabled) were gone.  And when I turn on Hidden devices they shows up. And yes i use Tunnebear and I guess tunnelbear caused the problem. Thanks
