DNS Server isnt responding >> No Wifi Internet connection

Hi I have a problem and I am not an expert : I am on Dell 15R 55 21, with Win 8.1, Intel Centrino wireless N 2230

I did not have this problem after I upgraded to Win 8.1, it happened yesterday suddenly. I checked on different networks. Cant connect via Wifi, can connect with bluetooth over mobile phone.

I continuously get the reply : DNS Server is not responding.

I checked drivers : it is up to date

I tried manual entry of my DNS server 192.186.1.1 >> not worked

I entered Google DNS Server >> not worked

I tried alternative DNS >> not worked

I tried flushdns , registerdns (that requires elevation it says) >> not worked

I tried Microsoft's suggestion for manual DNS entry:

a.      Press Windows key + X and select Command Prompt(Admin).

b.      Type ipconfig and press Enter.

c.       Note the IPV address, Subnet mask address and Default Gateway address and check if you have IPV 4 or IPV 6 connection.

Not worked since I am not connected I dont see Wi Fi DNS there

I cant sort this out and I am abroad. Pls help

Hi MelFindikoglu,

Please follow these steps:

Method 1: If you are using any non-Microsoft antivirus application, temporarily disable it.

You may refer to the antivirus maker website to check for the options to disable antivirus.

Note: Even if you disable third party antivirus, Windows Defender will still be running in the computer. This will guard your computer from malware.

Note: Enable the antivirus after checking the functionality.

If the issue still persists, continue to the next method.

Method 2: Try resetting the WINSOCK, TCP/IP and DNS on the computer.

a. Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard and select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the list.

b. In the command prompt window, type the following command and press Enter after each command.
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset catalog
ipconfig /flushdns

c. Type Exit in the command prompt window and then restart the computer.

After the restart, check if you still face this issue.

Try these steps and let us know the results. We’d be happy to help if you need any further assistance.

Hi Babu

first of all my antivirus program is in fact Microsoft. In fact previously I had the trial of Mc Afee but had no problems. Second when I typed in your commands above, it failed (all resets) The message is the command requires elevation, this is the message I got when I tried to reset dns. I have admin rights in my laptop, so what sort elevation is that?

Currently, it perfectly recognizes the Wifi modems, so there is no problem with the network card. However, it interchangeably cannot recognize the DNS server or the main gateway is not accessible. This is strange since that was not an issue when I started using this new laptop, it turned out to be nightmare when I stupidly upgrade to 8.1 Win 8.0 was annoying so 8.1 helped with usage but I lost the connection. Now I can connect to the same Wifi  via my cell and perform Bluetooth tethering , sometime this does not work, the laptop looses all kind of access points. I cannot use Wifi access but it is not stable, i.e. the problem keeps changing. But ultimately it cannot resolve the host!

Another problem is I used set the connection by entering the passcode and checking "connect automatically". Now it forgets and each time ask the passcode again and again. With Win 7.0 it was so easy that I modify / view the passcodes and manage all wireless connections, but I cannot access to the same menu anymore. Win 8+ is really annoying, instable. If it were a problem with the hardware it would consistently deny to access any wifi and not recognize the connection. The drivers are uptodate (all Dell drivers AND Intel Centrino driver)

Pls help.

PS Can I simply downgrade to Win 7, that was very stable?

Hi,

Even though you are logged in as administrator, you need to run commands in administrator mode.

That is designed to avoid changes without your knowledge.

Please try to run the commands in administrator mode and check with the issue.

Reply and let us know if you need any assistance.

I have the same problem ever since upgrading to win 8.1 ..everything worked fine before.  I see my network and everything on it...but the only time I could get on internet was over tethered cell phone connection.  I tried to update drivers (lenovo yoga 13) and using a new comcast all in one modem and router.

I tried disabling the virus software and fix #2 above..neither worked....HELP!

Hi VishwaRaj,

Change DNS server address to  global DNS then check. Refer to these steps.

  • Press Windows Key + R key. In the run window, type ncpa.cpl, hit Enter. Network connections window opens.
  • Right click local area connection, then click properties
  • Select Internet protocol  version(TCP/IPv4), then click properties
  • Select internet protocol ,select “use the following DNS server address”
  • change DNS server address to global DNS value given below
         Preferred 208.67.222.222
Alternate 208.67.220.220 (You can also use Google’s DNS address preferred 8.8.8.8 and alternate 8.8.4.4)
  • Check if issue is fixed. Changing the Preferred and Alternate error usually fix most of the cases.

If the issue still persists, try this:

If you use Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, disable it and check.

  • Press Windows key+X
  • Click Control panel
  • Click Network and sharing center
  • Click Change adapter settings on the left side
  • Disable Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, if present.

Try these steps and let us know the results.
