I need to open .webp files with the Windows 10 Photos app

I need to open .webp files with the Photos app but it doesn't show up in the "open with" context menu and I can't find the .exe file. I know that the Photos app can read it because renaming the extension works.

This shouldn't be hard to do but I can't find a way to do it.

Hi AmDarkmatter... Photo viewer is a windows\microsoft store app so they are hidden normally as you are finding.
You can try with a registry hack to get them to show up.
See link. FYI I tried it myself first and the file is safe to run.
Just create a system restore point first just in case.
To do this go to search and type create a restore point.

Thank you for the link. But I was referring to Microsoft Photos, not Windows Photo Viewer. I know that it supports .webp because renaming the extension worked. But when I try to use the open with context menu, the Photos app doesn't show up (not photo viewer but the Photos app).

Help would be appreciated.

I did the registry hack and unlocked Windows Photo Viewer. I can open other image files normally with it but I'm getting a corrupted error with the webp file even though the codecs are there.

What is the corrupted error?

This is what happens when I try to open 1.webp with Windows Photo Viewer.

This is what happens when I rename the file to 1.jpg. I did not convert it, I just renamed it.

However, Microsoft Photos is still able to read 1.jpg.

I would prefer if you can help me get Microsoft Photos in the choose default app list for webp but I can settle with making Windows Photo Viewer read it.

One more thing i want to try.
Let's try uninstalling and reinstalling photos.
Hopefully re-registering it will work.

Go to search and type powershell, then right-click PowerShell and select “Run as administrator.” In the Powershell window type the following:

get-appxpackage *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage

Reboot.

Then log back in and go to the store and reinstall it.

Unfortunately Store doesn't work on my PC (I'm using a local account on a shared family PC). Is there any other method to get the latest version?
