Excel Info page shows protected workbook, but it isn't

Hy,

I have a workbook that shows up as protected in the info page, but it is not protected.

I tryied protecting it, saving and opening it again but it stays the same.

I can't see the columns titles, freeze or split spreadsheets, and the sprearsheet tab disaperared in same sheets.

I'm guessing this might be related.

Thanks in advance

Hello Fernando,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Office Community.

Please provide more information to help you better.

1) Who is the author of Excel file in question? Is it you or someone else?

2) What is the extension of the Excel file? Is it *.xls or *.xlsx?

3) Under File > Info, do you have the option unprotect as seen in the image below?

Note: You will also find the name of protected work sheet.

Reply with necessary information to help you further.

Thank you.

1. I'm the author. I'm not sure if I started it as a .xls,or .ods, but now is .xlsx.

2. .xlsx

3. No, "Unprotect" does not appear, nor the name of any worksheets. It only states that "The structure of the workbook has been locked to prevent unwaranted changes, such as moving, deleting, or adding sheets"

Thanks in advance!

As per your description, your workbook is protected. If you workbook is protected, you will be shown like below on Info.

Now, unfortunately, it doesn't say Unprotect Workbook, here on Info page. It, only says that Structure of the workbook has been locked...

You will need to go into workbook, Review tab > Protect Workbook (Here also, it will not say Unprotect. In case of Sheet Protection, Unprotect sheet is shown on this tab but not for Workbook if Workbook is protected). The only indication is that this Protect Workbook will be in pressed mode, hence of different colour. (Also, in a protected workbook if you take right click on a tab, most of the options will be disabled)

Once you click on Protect Workbook, you will be asked to supply password to unlock it.

Sincerely yours,

The "Protect Workbook" is not in pressed mode (and I'm not shown an unprotect option only this).

Also, in some sheet's, I cannot see the sheet tab. I supposed it was beecause the strucuture was locked. I can only change to another sheet using keyboard shortcuts.

Hi All,

I have this very same problem.

Two of my workbooks (I am the author and both are *.xlsx files) say on their info pages

"That the structure of the workbook has been locked to prevent unwanted changes etc, etc" (with no option to unprotect from the info page) and if I select "Review" "Protect Workbook" (non coloured "icon") within my workbook I just get the option to protect it.

Anybody found out how to unprotect an unprotected workbook yet.

In the INFO screen where it shows you that your structure is protected and highlighted in yellow, click on the dropdown arrow in the Protect Workbook button to the left of the message.  In the dropdown choose/click on Protect Workbook Structure option.  This is a toggle based on my testing so if you do that and then go to info again it will not show the structure as being protected.

this is assuming no password was set.  It if was, you will need to furnish the password I would guess.

In the dialog that appears in this thread, the Structure option will always be checked - but it is not always in effect.

Still having issues myself. This workbook I have for paying bills was created and protect in excel 2013. It has been brought over to excel 2016 when I upgraded this year. Could this be the issue?

I also am having an identical issue.

I can protect and unprotect the workbook all day long, from the review ribbon or the file info.  File info still shows itself as protect workbook highlighted, but the workbook is not protected.

As such, I cannot freeze panes / unfreeze panes, which is what I was trying to do.
