Windows 10 Tablet Mode Experience Part 3 (Anniversary Update, v. 1607)

Continuation of discussions:

Credit goes to PaoloCardelli for the conversation.

This part 3 picks up the discussion as of the public release of the Anniversary Update (Windows 10 version 1607, previously codename "Redstone"), which includes several iterations and evolutions of the Windows experience.  The primary topic of this discussion is contrasting the tablet touch-first experience in Windows 10 as compared to the Windows 8.1 "Metro UI" design paradigms.

As noted in the previous parts of this discussion, all are also encouraged to post your suggestions and problem reports in the built-in Windows Feedback app.

Thanks for starting the new thread!  Here are my items as of build 14393.5:

Deficiencies when compared to 8.1:

  1. Unable to snap more than two panes in tablet mode.
  2. Tablet mode cannot be used with multiple monitors.
  3. Apps open on the last monitor opened, not the monitor on which they are clicked from Start *this is a big one for me**.
  4. Unable to multi-select tiles when managing tiles.
  5. Should be able to swipe left to open All Apps.
  6. All Apps should use more than three columns and properly fill the screen.
  7. All Apps should be sortable as in 8.1 (alphabetic, use frequency, date installed, and how about a new option, last updated)
  8. Unable to scale Start independently from the rest of the system. Tiles should scale and not have so much margin space. (DPI scaling in general is still a disaster)
  9. Not necessarily related to tablet mode, but.... ONEDRIVE PLACEHOLDERS!!!
  10. Star screen tile groups are limited to 2 large tiles. Users should be able to expand this.
  11. Start screen layout does not upgrade into 10 from 8.1.
  12. Start screen website pins do not upgrade into 10 from 8.1.
  13. Start screen layout does not sync between devices **this one is HUGE for me**
  14. Start Screen background cannot be customized independently of desktop background (I miss the animated Start Screen backgrounds)
  15. No one-click method (or gesture) of returning to the previous app. A two-finger left edge-swipe would solve this as well as re-enabling the upper-left corner click.
  16. Edge still doesn't allow full-screen browsing.
  17. Edge's tabs, menus, and address bar should be at the bottom of the screen or have an option to be there.
  18. 8.1 allowed snapping from the task list but the task view that replaces it does not allow snapping.
  19. Web site live tiles are broken for many sites. Neowin and Windows Central no longer work. The only site that still seems to work that I know of is Fox News and sometimes.  (This even seems to be broken in 8.1)
  20. Windows Store listings no longer display the last time an app was updated or it's version.
  21. While Edge has recently been updated to show Favicons on pinned sites, it's inconsistent and doesn't always work. An example is RobertsSpaceIndustries.com. A custom icon is displayed at the top of Edge, but not in the pin.
  22. Swipe in Edge for back/forward has been implemented, but the animation is very poor and should receive another pass.
  23. Windows Reading List (WRL) is being discontinued with no replacement. The reading list in Edge is only useful within Edge while WRL could collect content from any app with Share capability. There is no way to export content from WRL other than opening saved content and saving/sharing them a different way. ** this is a TREMENDOUS blow to me. WRL is a key app in my world. Onenote is the closest replacement, but requires me to categorize in a separate step **
  24. Users should have the option of a brightness slider in addition to the preset options.

New capabilities we should have:

  1. Tile groups as on mobile.
  2. Transparent tiles with an option for user-customizable tile backgrounds as on mobile.
  3. Option to use squares instead of circles for people-related photos **I HATE THE CIRCLES CROPPING OFF BODY PARTS AND PEOPLE FROM ALBUMS**
  4. Wordflow keyboard
  5. Snap from taskbar
  6. Option to have open apps remain full-screen or forced minimized when exiting tablet mode.
  7. Interactive live tiles
  8. Visual indication of tiles that are no longer updating or that have not updated after a user-specified time
  9. Ability to pin documents to Start as easily as folders and apps
  10. Tile resize view that looks like the old Windows 7 Start Menu pins section (left hand side). Essentially, let us pin a tile that has the app/folder/file icon on the left, and the text label on the right. ** this would be VERY useful new feature when pinning data folders and documents **
  11. And, because it needs to be said again, ONEDRIVE PLACEHOLDERS!!!

I'll add more later -- have to get back to work. :)

So many... I considered making a shared spreadsheet in OneDrive but that could be cumbersome. I am going to try to finish my blog post rant about the UX difficiences that are my pet peeves (Edge getting worse in tablet mode, and Windows Hello reverting to full-password instead of PIN if you use fingerprint and then fold back/detect your keyboard, which is just punishing the user for no reason).  As Microsoft research Bill Braxton said, small things matter, good and bad.

I think a shared spreadsheet with designated editors would be a really good idea.

Very well done.

We all did contribute in a major way to all the Anniversary Update improvements to Tablet Mode for sure.

Let's keep up the feedback flow for all the Redstone 2 cycle too :)

Just a thought on the new Light/Dark modes. Many developers are hard coding Light & Dark modes into their apps, instead of using the system setting. Some are adding the option to use the default system mode, but problem is how many taps or clicks are required to toggle these modes in the system, it's just WAY more convenient to app users to have these modes built into apps. The only way to change that is to make access to the system mode more convenient. For that reason, I feel that a Light/Dark Mode Toggle should be added to Action Center. I think this would benefit users as well developers.

Sorry, I guess this isn't specific to Tablet mode, and there is already a lot of feedback on this. But the reason I mention it is because I find that swipe in from the right to access Action Center to be useless in a lot of ways. Most of the notifications are more annoyance than useful - quick dismissals; and I hardly touch any of the toggles. Bluetooth, Wifi, Project, Note... maybe others use these... for me, the best thing about Action Center is simply the existence of it. A clock, or a full Calendar would give me genuine reason to use that gesture, especially if Taskbar is hidden... And Light/Dark mode are options I could actually see using a lot. I think Action Center in general needs to go from being a pretty little swipe gesture placeholder to being much more useful daily.

Yay! Thanks Shawn. It's like moving into a new house.

One issue I'm having is scaling seeming to have a life of its own.  Is there a setting to reduce sensitivity on this?

There needs to be a way for people to rate what they feel is:

  1. critical issue,
  2. a like to have, and
  3. a change that they can lived with.

There are also different needs for:

  1. low power and small tablets (eg 32G or sub 9.7in tablets),
  2. better powered peripheral-less tablets, and
  3. "Pro" tablets/hybrids/laptops in tablet mode.

Already there are nearly 30 things here. Many have been raised before and there are different opinions about some of these. Some are impractical to implement and only of a one off advantage on install to a very small number of people eg preserving personal start page layouts from Win 8 when the design philosophy between the two is different and more than half of Win 8.1 users and more than 2/3rds of Win 8 users have already left Win 8.x behind them

I'd really appreciate it if you'd leave it to the development team to decide what is impractical to implement.

What data are you citing to determine that an item is only "a one off advantage on install to a very small number of people" and "more than 2/3rds of Win 8 users have already left Win 8.x behind"?

As an IT consultant assisting clients with upgrading from Windows 8 I have spent multiple hours just rebuilding start screens. Unlike many, I trained my users on how to use the Start Screen and many have customized it to their liking. Losing those customizations (and the absence of syncing) has cost a lot of time and I'd thank you to not fight my efforts to save that time in the future.

I've tried to be diplomatic, but while you have made valuable contributions to this thread, many times your messages have been combative and judgmental. Previously, there was very little debate about features here. People stated what they missed from 8.1, talked about what they'd like to see, and other people chimed in if they agreed or didn't. While I haven't read every message, I can't remember anyone authoritatively telling another poster why they didn't need something or why Microsoft shouldn't implement their request.

Please -- let us ask for what we want, and trust the development team to decide what is worth implementing. They have a lot more data from which to make those determinations that we do here.

If you want to debate a request, feel free to create a new thread and link it here. Otherwise, please allow the thread moderators to continue the excellent job they've done in collating our requests, tracking feedback links, and noting implementation/fix status.

I sincerely hope I do not offend you by writing this, and I hope you continue to help us call attention to the remaining rough edges within Windows 10.

Why do you always seek to make any contribution that you disagree with appear to be an argument rather than just a contribution with an alternate view?

It is perfectly reasonable to discuss views on what some people want. Unweighted and undiscussed feedback by one individual is worth far less than properly thought out and publically discussed feedback. What is wrong with suggesting a weighting and a process to find out what WE want as a group, rather than just what you want?

It is not combative to point out that it is impractical to transfer start page layouts from that allowed in Win 8 to that allowed in Win 10. It is not judgemental to point out that this suggestion is to solve a once off issue for a small and shrinking number of people.

It is combative and judgemental to demand I shut up or go elsewhere and that I must prove my sources. The data is from Statcounter. In this, 8.1 peaked at less than 16% of active users to now having less than 8%, Win 8 from nearly 8% to less than 2.4%. It is reasonable to assume virtually all those still on a Win 8 tablet and a sizable proportion of the remaining Win 8.1 tablet users will only update to Win 10 by replacing their device. Rather than complaining about someone disagreeing with you, please justify why you think MS should divert resources from solving things like your other problems to provide a feature that will be used only once by a small proportion of a small proportion users?
