Driving with the Speedwheel

I just got the wireless speedwheel for christmas...it's a lot of fun to drive, but I'm having one major problem...

I'm not sure if it's being too senseitive or just my suckage, but it seems the backend of my car is constantly want to come around, I have a hard time keeping the dang thing straight, I can't seem to make any sudden movements without me spinning ou0t (basically it seems i'm constantly drifting), I never had this trouble with the controller...am I just jerking the controller around too much?

I always find the opposite; it's harder for me to be smooth and not over-control with the controller than with the speed wheel. But if everything else is the same - same car, car setup and track - then maybe you just need to get used to the wheel. Do you just rotate it, or do you also jerk the whole wheel around when steering?  The wheel really just has  an accelerometer in it, so jerking it from side to side could cause steering inputs that you didn't intend. I find the best technique for using the speed wheel smoothly is to rest my elbows against something, usually against my stomach, and just move my forearms to steer. I've seen friends try holding their arms out in front of them and move their whole arms, and they have a much harder time steering accurately, not to mention it makes their arms tired.

It really doesn't feel like i'm jerking it, I just lose control of the car at times where I never have lost it before, it's so frustrating because I'm loving the wheel, but at the same time it's really pissing me off

The more wheel time you put in, you get better

Not to go off topic or hijack the thread but I was planing on picking this up and I have two questions.

1) I guess since there is no stick you can't look around the cockpit view right? Since there is no stick and I don't think you can map that to any other buttons. So I guess this is where Kinect Head Tracking would be a must.

2) Do you HAVE to use batteries or can you use the same Battery Pack as the controllers?

Thanks for helping answer these questions and sorry to cut in on your topic OP. Just was wondering about these.

OP, I am having the same problem as you, with my car losing control constantly! I suppose it will just take practice, I have been playing racing games with a controller for many, many years so I have just grown accustomed to it I guess.

I had better luck once I changed the Steering option to "Simulation"

Mewtwo: 1) correct. 2) batteries. Two AA batteries down each side to keep the weight evenly distributed.

I can play FM for hours and I cant imagine anyone holding their arms up like that. There has to be another way of enjoying that wheel without feeling like you did 100 push-ups.

If you hold it like I suggested in my earlier post, with your elbows resting against the edges of your stomach, then it shouldn't be much more tiring than using a controller. That said, I've never tried using the speed wheel for hours at a time. I have an actual wheel and pedals, and only use the speed wheel as a spare wheel for when I want to play split screen with friends.

Damnit... Why couldn't they just make it take the Battery pack in the middle? So it takes 4 AA's? Damn... maybe I should just reconsider this... I don't like buying batteries over and over. And it doesn't even just take two it takes 4?? Maybe I'll just stick to a controller... :: Sighs ::
