Can I connect Xbox One directly to a sound bar?

Good afternoon everyone, I have been trying to find an answer to this question, but couldn't find a solution just yet. I have an Xbox One that is connected to my TV via HDMI cord. My satellite/cable box is also connected to my Xbox One via HDMI so I can snap TV and otherwise watch TV on my Xbox One just fine. My question is concerning adding audio peripherals to this current setup. My TV unfortunately does not have an optical output, however I was wondering if I could just run an optical cable directly from the optical output of the Xbox One console to a Sony sound bar / subwoofer combo. I can't see why this wouldn't work, but I didn't want to go through the trouble of setting this up for nothing. As I understand it, I wouldn't need a receiver as the sound bar has it's own power/amplification. If this option does happen to work, does anyone know if the audio would work for not only Xbox One games, but also any TV shows or movies that I'm basically running through the console? Thanks for reading!

If there is an optical input for your sound bar thing it should work, but fyi the digital out on the xbox one is still a patch or two from full functionality.

Yes you can plug a soundbar directly in the  Xbox One  with an Optical cable. This is how I have mine set up

I've conned my X1 to a Samsung sound bar via optical cable. Sounds works well, but no volume control.

I've done it with a Sonos Playbar.  Works great.  Apps, games, all go through.

XB1 doesn't do Dolby over the optical.  It only does stereo uncompressed or DTS.  If your soundbar doesn't support DTS, you're stuck with stereo.  My Playbar doesn't support DTS either and have to use the stereo uncompressed.  Don't have a problem any sound skipping though.

the sound skipping is only in the menu tho, its not a major problem. Its only the little sound it does when you browse throu every little program icons that seems to skip some times

So when is this patch supposed to drop? I've been waiting over a month. Its almost 2014 and your telling me one of the largest corporations on the planet cant "figure out" or afford Dolby licensing? How embarrassing.  Not to mention  the silence surrounding this glaring and blatant shortcoming from Microsoft.  Only one press release since November 21st saying a "Post launch update will happen"? At least give me something to look forward to...

Same.  How to program it to use the volume up/down voice command is the only issue I am having.
