Windows XP Media Center Version 2002 Service Pack 3 CD-ROM

Following loads of problems with my computer I have scanned my core system files + found some faulty ones. The scan program asked me to insert my original CD-ROM, which I did. Unfortunately the original disk is 'Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 Service Pack 2'. I have downloaded Service Pack 3 since getting my computer. The scan program can't repair the files unless I actually insert the CD-ROM: Windows XP Media Center Version 2002 Service Pack 3 ! How can I get hold of this actual CD-ROM for the repair? I have been receiving ongoing help from Bullguard, who say that I really must get or borrow this CD for the repair.

Hi,

I would suggest that you run [System File Checker] SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

a.       Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.

b.      At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

Note: You may be prompt to insert the Windows XP CD.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Hi, Thanks for your suggestion, but it is the SFC scan I’ve been trying to run! It prompted me for my installation disk

'Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 Service Pack 2' but then couldn’t use it as I’ve downloaded Service Pack 3 since the original installation. It now needs Windows XP Media Center Version 2002 Service Pack 3 CD-ROM in order to copy the necessary files + do the repair! How on earth do I find or borrow one of these? I doubt that it’s ever been sold as this combination as Windows Vista was on sale by the time Service Pack 3 came out!

My anti-virus provider, Bullguard, have been advising me with the ongoing problems I’ve had + they say I will need the actual CD as this requirement is an unfortunate feature of Windows XP.

Please can you help, or let me know of someone who can? Perhaps there is a way around this problem after all? Or maybe there is some way to get hold of the CD? My computer won’t run properly until I’ve done this repair.

Thanking you, Starsister

Hi Starsister,

·         Did you try attempting to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3?

Removing Windows XP Service Pack 3 is the same as their original installation disc.

I may need some help here. I've looked in Add/Remove programs + although Service Pack 3 is listed there is no Remove button. It just gives info on how often it's used, which is rarely. Going to its support page didn't help either - just support with installing it. Could you advise me please?

Running SFC/Scannow is unwise. I am surprised that anyone recommends it. It is problematic in that it hardly ever solves any problems and it is almost impossible for the average Windows PC user to make it work.

For best results, give up on the idea of running SFC/Scannow.  If Bullgard is instructing you to do that, they are just offering you "bull" advice!

Let's address the actual problems you have been experiencing instead. Just give us as much information as possible, including:

- make, model, and model number of your PC

- detailed description of any problematic behavior

- whether or not you have all the post-SP3 security patches installed

- the names of all your security programs (such as antivirus, antimalware, firewall, etc.)

- whether or not your antivirus/antimalware programs have the latest definitions

- the current malware status of your PC

- any error messages you see (include the COMPLETE text)

- size of hard drive and amount of free space

- amount of RAM
