Windows Media Center won't play video, but Windows Media Player will?!

I am trying to play a .avi video with the xvid codec. I installed the codec earlier and it plays fine in Windows Media Player, but when I try to play it in Windows Media Center it says that one or more codecs are required to play this file but they can't be found. I know I could just watch it with Windows Media Player instead of Media Center, but I want to watch it on my Media Center extension (my Xbox). I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate, 64-bit. Why does Windows Media Player work with this codec and Windows Media Center not? How can I fix this problem?

Did you see this section of the article?

“The Xbox 360 doesn’t use PC based codecs.  Codec are local on the machine and not user upgradeable.  If you have a file that doesn’t play your choice are to use something like Transcode 360 or to re-encode the file to a format supported by the Xbox 360.”

Being that you say you are trying to play these videos through your XBOX, that transcoder above may help, I can’t vogue for it however being that I am unfamiliar with the software. This is more so an example of the type of software you may want to try or look for on your favorite search engine.

Hi Slick05_1,

I know that VLC player will play .mkv files.  The program might have a codec that will help you play .mkv files on other player also.  Once a codec in the system, other media player might pick up on it and use it also.  It's something to consider about.  You can find VLC player by doing a search with your favorite search engine.
