Back up fails with error code 0x800706BA. Anybody know what to do ?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your question in Microsoft Community.

I understand that when you try to backup your files, you receive an error code 0x800706BA. Correct me if I am wrong.

I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. I will definitely help you in fixing the issue.

To help you suggest more steps to resolve the issue, I would appreciate if you could answer the following questions:

1.What are you trying to backup?

2. Have you made any recent hardware or software changes to your computer prior to the issue?

Please follow the below methods and check the issue:

Method 1:

The error code 0x800706BA means that the RPC Server is Unavailable. To resolve this issue please follow the steps mentioned below.

a. Press Windows symbol + R key simultaneously, type in services.msc and then press Enter.

b. In the Service list, right click on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service and also for Volume Shadow Copy service , and then select properties.

c. Make sure that the service is started and running automatically.

Method 2:

Step 1:

Disable antivirus software:

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Step 2:

You need to perform a Clean Boot to prevent any conflicting third party applications from interfering with your computer.

To place the computer in a Clean Boot state, you need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below and check with the issue.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8:

Note: You need to follow Step 3 from the article mentioned above to get the computer back to Normal Startup after performing all the steps.

I have the same issue and looked at the MS person's response.

Both VSS and RPC server are set to manual in my Win7 machine. I manually started them both and tried to run backup again, and got the same error (0x800706BA).

The code implies that the backup service was unable to contact VSS using RPC.

Often this type of problem happens when a service related DLL's registration has been damaged by something.

I need to know how to re-register VSS DLLs, I think that will fix the issue. Alternatively if the backup software can be removed and reinstalled, the setup would fix the registrations.

Please respond with further instructions on how to fix the error stated.

Thanks,

vic
