Windows Cumulative Update KB3197954 failed to install with error 0x800F0922

Hello all,

I have been having trouble with Windows Updates. The last two cumulative updates (KB3197954, KB3194496) have both failed to install, giving me the message "We couldn't install the updates. Undoing changes." and constantly going through this install-failure-undo loop every time.

I tried doing the registry edit for KB3194496 and even tried the hotfix that Microsoft released, but nothing fixed the problem and I eventually just reinstalled the latest version of Windows 10.

Now, with update KB3197954, I am again getting the install failure. Checking the event view shows that it failed to install with error 0x800F0922. I tried installing the update manually from the Windows Update Catalog, but upon restart, it failed again.

I am getting increasingly frustrated, as Windows' last two updates have basically made my computer unusable without a 10 minute update loop on every restart.

I have uploaded my system summary and event viewer logs here:

All the fix scripts and hacks I found didn't work. What did work for me:

- downloaded a 1607 iso image

- Right-click -> mount

- On the mounted volume run setup

- Run an upgrade installation (keeping your files settings) and when asked, let it download the updates before starting the installation.

- After it's finished, let Windows update run again. It won't find so many as most of them are already installed by the setup.

It continually failed for me too until I uninstalled AVG Antivirus Free (for totally unrelated reasons) and enabled Windows Defender instead.

Sadly I did not check the AVG log for any indication that AVG was behind the failures before uninstalling it but coincidentally or not KB3197954 has now installed successfully.

So if using a 3rd party antivirus product, check its log.

Hope this helps.

After fussing around with trying to get kb3194798 and KB3197954 installed over the last 2 weeks with no success this solution worked perfectly.

Total time to fix via the above instructions was around 1 1/2 hours.

Thanks for the post!!!

A thousand thank you's.

This has been the only solution that has helped me after 3 failed CU updates.

I tried this approach, but got stuck at the point where you select "Keep personal files and apps".
I could not select that option; it was only letting me select "Nothing" and the note at the bottom said "You can't keep Windows settings, personal files and apps because your current version of Windows might be installed in an unsupported directory."
The "Nothing" option said "Everything will be deleted including files, apps and settings."

The current version is Windows 10 Home on a 3 year old Dell PC that came with Windows 8 or 8.1 (I think).

Any ideas on how to proceed?

In my case I downloaded the update file

windows10.0-kb3197954-x64_74819c01705e7a4d0f978cc0fbd7bed6240642b0.msu
and installed perfectly. It did the reboot and even asked me not to turn off computer as if everything normal but when Windows was back it reported it as failed. I tried again to install manually, and same result. Update KB3197954 appears as failed to install even though it appeared to install successfully. First time something like this happens to me.
