"Microsoft Print to PDF" missing from printer selection

Recently upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 about a week ago. Initially, I was able to use the built in "Microsoft Print to PDF" option when I wanted to save a file to my computer. At some point however, this option disappeared from the printer selection drop down of the printing dialog. I also got a new printer recently (which still works fine), but I went through and deleted all the random old printer drivers. I don't remember seeing a Windows driver (other than XPS writer, which is still there) but maybe I removed the "Microsoft Print to PDF" driver? If so, I can't find anywhere on the computer or the web to add it back to my device list.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per the issue description you are facing issue wit the printer after upgrading to Windows 10. This could be if the drivers for printer either get corrupted or outdated.

So, try the steps provided below and see if it helps you to fix the issue.

Method 1

Try to run the in built printer troubleshooter.

  • Press the ‘Windows key on the keyboard.
  • Type troubleshooting in the search box and then press enter.
  • Click on view all, this will list all of the in built troubleshooter.
  • Click on Printer and follow the onscreen instruction.

Method 2

The issue could also be related to the Printer drivers and other updates. I want to inform you that updates will be released by Microsoft. So, I would suggest you to keep checking your Windows updates not only important one but optional too. If any available try to install them and see if it helps you to fix the issue.

First try to install all of the Windows updates available and if issue persists, try to update the Printer drivers by following the steps provided in the article mentioned below.

How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows 10

If issue still persists, then install the drivers for Windows 8/8.1 from the manufacturer's website in compatibility mode and check if that works.

Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows

Hope this would help. If issue still persists post back with current status of your computer and result of the proposed suggestion, we will be happy to assist you.

Regards,

Ramesh Kumar.

Method 1 turned up no results. I have been automatically installing all Windows updates since W10 was installed. Regardless, Method 2 isn't going to work anyways because the printer driver was operational after the original installation of Windows 10, and barring the ludicrous idea of removal of features during the update, something went wrong. The solution that should be available is a link to download the original "Print to PDF" option that was on the Windows 10 prior to the problem, as it should be a simple driver/program built into the Windows 10 operating system.

And please, don't tell me to do a clean install of Windows 10 to fix this simple problem.

After way too much time searching the internet, I found how to add it back as a printer driver:

http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/print-pdf-windows/

This guide was exactly what I was looking for, and now I have the Print to Pdf option back and saving to my documents folder as a pdf.

Thanks for your help anyway.

This is actually the right answer when you have had the driver/feature before but somehow don't have it now anymore and cannot find it through the other mentioned option of adding it

(through Setting->Devices->Add a Printer-The printer wasn't listed etc.)

As soon as I entered optionalfeatures.exe in my search field and it opened up I saw the list and remembered I had been tinkering in it a couple of weeks ago after changing my (admin) user profiles. In the popup window make sure the box " Microsoft Print to PDF" is ticked on and your problem is solved !

Thanks for the update! Users can make a mistake during Port section when using Add Printer wizard. Wrong selection there (such as LPT1 or Print to File) would cause MS Print to PDF to do nothing when print command is issued. Windows Features is also the easiest option to disable/re-enable the item.
