"Access Denied" when adding folders to "WindowsApps" directory

Hi, 

Whenever I try to edit or add any file within the WindowsApps folder, I get this error message:

I've gone to Properties like all the online tutorials and YouTube videos said, changed the ownership to 'Everyone', gave Everyone full control, checked off "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", checked off "replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object", and deselected the "read-Only" tickbox. None of them do anything. I would have resorted to blatantly taking ownership of the C:\ directory with the command

takeown /f "c:" /r

but after running it for an hour, it hadn't even gotten to the Program Files folder. And I didn't really feel comfortable with all my System32 files becoming insecure. 

I'm running Windows 10 on a Lenovo laptor with a 64bit OS. All I want to do is edit a file in the WindowsApps folder! Isn't there a simple way to go about it? It's been really frustrating, as I've been at this for the past few days. Please help!

Press Windows key + R
Type: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Hit Enter

Create the folder there then name it.

Hi Thatrius, the WindowsApps folder is one of the most heavily protected folders in Windows 10, as it contains all the Windows UWP apps, which Microsoft do not want us having access to.

Can you explain what you are trying to do and there may be a workaround to enable you to do that . . .

Hi, 

I had installed Minecraft last week, and thought it would be a fun project to edit the JSON files (I was following an online tutorial on creating "Add-Ons"). Unfortunately I couldn't extract a certain folder (the one that held the JSON files) because "the specified directory was not recognized"; so I decided to just make a new folder, then simply move the .zip's contents. I then received a pop-up window informing me that "Access Is Denied".

After following just about every online tutorial claiming to fix the problem (and failing), I'm not sure what else to do. And I suppose that doesn't matter as much anyway, because after I ran the 'takeown' command, the Minecraft application suddenly ceased to open when clicked. I uninstalled it, and tried to open Microsoft Store in hopes of reinstalling. Now the Store application doesn't work either.

If I tried resetting the Store, would it in turn delete the applications I purchased?

Hi Dave

I don't know what Thatrius is looking to do but I'm having the same problem with permissions. What I want to do is simply to drop an ICO file into the specific app folder in WINDOWSAPPS. It's a visibility thing for me. It's very frustrating that MS has decided that experienced, even expert users should not be allowed access to their own computers. 

Do you know any way around this?
