No "Fingerprint Password" option in Sign-in options.

Hi,

OS:
I am Windows 8.1 64-bit through update i got from Windows Store.

Problem:
My problem is that I can't find Fingerprint Password in Sign-in Options. How can I fix this to set up a Fingerprint Password? I have tried Installing Windows 7 64-bit version of driver, it installs successfully, but Fingerprint option is still not visible. Even if I can't get this option, are there any alternative software's?

Current Drivers Installed:
On Official HP Website I noticed that there are no drivers for Windows 8.1 in my notebook. So, I am currently using Windows 7 Drivers 64-bit.

Additional Information:
In Fingerprint Sensor Properties in Hardware and Sound, It says Device information Unavailable, but it shows correct information in Device Manager.

Screenshots:
Fingerprint Sensor Options (in Devices and Printers):

Device Manager:
P.S: That "Unknown Device" is HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection (with Hardware ID ACPI\HPQ0004\3&21436425&0).

Sign-in Options:

My Specs:
Laptop: HP EliteBook 6930p
OS: Windows 8.1 64-Bit
Fingerprint Sensor Model: AuthenTec AES2810
Fingerprint Sensor Version: 8.2.200.42 (Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Version)

Please help me, Thank You.

Installing version 8 of the SimplePass software (sp64339) at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&softwareitem=ob-126956-1 got the fingerprint scanner working on Windows 8.1 for my EliteBook 6930p.

You do apparently need a compatible fingerprint Driver installed -- I have not found anything difinitive yet on driver version -- I suspect you need at least the driver that is compatible with Windows 8.

  • If you have a downloaded Validity Sensor Driver, you might try unistalling AND deleting the existing driver
  • Restart / Reboot the system and log in
  • Install your downloaded Validity driver
  • Restart / Reboot the system and log in
  • Install the latest HP SimplePass over the top of your existing version

Now, it is the last part of the sequence that I am not sure about -- Windows 8.1 apparently supports fingerprint software on its own, at least for windows login -- does that mean that one does not even need SimplePass?  That does not sound right as SimplePass stores (or at least stored) one's website logins within the software's database.  ??

You may have to enable the Biometrics for Windows 8.1 to pick up the Biometrics setting.  Interestingly, the configuration is supposed to be defaulting to enabled even if you do not configure the options -- this appears to work as indicated in Windows 8 -- Windows 8.1 may not be picking up the default due to the manner in which the native (built in) fingerprint software sees the setup.

Be sure you have created a Restore Point and make sure your backups are current BEFORE changing settings on your computer.

Windows key + R (opens the Run command box) > type gpedit.msc > Enter >
Under Computer Configuration > Select Administrative Templates >
          Windows Components > Biometrics

In Biometrics > consider that for a home system, you might enable the following:

  1. Allow the use of biometrics
  2. Allow users to log on using biometrics

Commentary

This is only for  Windows 8.1 pro fingerprinter.

For anyone reading this:  I do not work for Microsoft.  I am one of you, I am an owner and user of Acer and Microsoft products.    I am not an employee of the company and I do not have access to the code used to drive the security setup.

I am having this same issue after a Windows 10 upgrade. My settings were disabled when I went in gpedit.msc but it did not fix my issue Windows still says it can't see my fingerprint scanner and won't let me log in using it even though it worked in Windows 7.

I am having a similar problem getting my fingerprint scanner to work on my HP Pavillion dv6-6135dx Entertainment PC. I had it working on Windows 10 after we did a system restore it didn't work. I tried downloading windows 7 finger print driver yet I was blocked from putting it on and the software is from HP go figure.

I found this thread in looking for a solution for the same issue on a Lenovo ThinkPad.  Hopefully your issue is resolved.  I resolved the issue for my laptop by uninstalling the device through device manager (drivers included) and restarting my laptop.  The device reinstalled itself automatically and I was able to use the fingerprint scanner to log in.

Thank you David!  Why can't the Microsoft people ever propose these simple fixes!?  Whenever I need an answer on these forums I can always count on the fact that a Microsoft person is not going to give me the answer.
