Windows 8.1 - slow performance when streaming videos

Hi

I recently installed the Windows 8.1 update from the store onto a new Asus laptop running a Pentium dual-core 1.5Ghz with 4GB RAM.  Overall, the OS ran perfectly and I was really pleased to see the integrated Bing search and return of the start button.

Unfortunately, internet videos such as Youtube and Lovefilm were so juddery and slow they were pretty much unwatchable.  I tried all the suggested resets, setting changes and update checks in Internet Explorer and downloaded Firefox and Chrome, but sadly these suffered from the same problem.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?  Does anyone know if it's my laptop spec that's too stretched by 8.1?  I watch a lot of Youtube and, as this was the worst performing site, I've now reset my machine to Windows 8 and everything is super fast again.

I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions from others who may have had the same or similar issues!

Thanks.

I had a similar problems with choppy playback.

I noticed Windows 8.1 updated the display driver for my Intel HD 4000 to the newest version (10.18.10.3316). I tried downgrading it to the one I had in Windows 8 (9.17.10.3114) and the playback problems went away. Are any of you using Intel integrated graphics?

I noticed the same problem on Hulu on my Lenovo Q190, which uses intel integrated graphics.  Hulu playback was fine, and after the update it was very jittery.  Where did you go to download the previous driver?

I have a Sony VAIO so I downloaded the driver from Sony's site. You could try Levono's support site or download straight from Intel: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/. I doubt it has to be exactly the same version I had, any Windows 8 version probably works.

The graphics on my Asus are Intel HD - I reckon this was the problem.

I'm going to wait till I've a few spare hours until I re-install the Windows 8.1 update and then I'll check out the drivers.  Running Windows 8 again now I notice the graphics driver version is 9.17.10.2843, i.e. what appears to be a similar version to yours.  I'll post the outcome once I've done it too.

Thanks for the advice!

Yes, I've been having issues with youtube since the update as well. Microsoft swears it's not them.

Same exact problem. I can download at 25mbps, which is my Xfinity speed, then any time I try to stream video from a website, Youtube or otherwise, my download will STOP... literally STOP, and the video will stream at 300k or less.

This is real &*%&^ broken. Using Microsoft Surface Pro (1)

Actually upon further testing...

I have a download going in Chrome on the desktop, if I switch to full screen Windows App 'Video' and play something off the disk the download will stop or slow to a crawl. Even if I split screen the app. My download will crawl until I take the app off the screen.

What the heck??
