USB drive continuously popping up while plugged

I have a new surface pro 3, i regularly back up and store files as i work.

While it (or any other USB drive) is plugged in, the drive folder continuously pops up  as if i had just plugged the drive in.

It is very annoying since it stops whatever work i'm doing on the keyboard till i bring the file i am typing on forward again.

How can i stop this without unplugging the drive altogether?

Hi William P808,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Community! We value the time you have taken to post in the forums to discuss the issue you are experiencing with your Surface Pro 3. I can certainly see how the USB driver message popping up frequently while you are working can be distracting and inconvenient. I would like to help and do my best to guide you in the right direction!

Please check the following:

  • First and foremost, verify you have all and latest Windows updates installed. This is very important.
  • Please make sure you have tested other USB devices. This is the best way to determine if the problem is with the USB port on the Surface Pro 3 or the USB device itself.
  • Do you have issues with other external storage devices?
  • Is your device self-powered? Do you have only the USB connected to the Surface or does it also have a separate power source?

Please test, apply and check the previous instructions and keep us posted!

We will be looking forward to your reply. We are always here to help!

Best Wishes,

Mar T.

I am having the exact same problem.

I have unchecked the box in device manager that would allow windows to power down the USB devices.

This has not been effective at stopping the behaviour

Each time the drive powers down, it powers back up almost immediately and a file explorer screen pops up showing the drive. This is happening every few minutes at the moment. It is incredibly annoying

I have tested on other win8.1 machines - I do not experience the same occurrence.

This leads me to believe that it is a surface-related issue.
