Surface Keyboard constantly going to sleep after a few seconds without typing

Hey,

I bought recently a Bluetooth Surface Keyboard for windows 10 and it's been crazy to work with. Constantly re-connecting, while it does screen freezes for a second. 5-6 seconds without typing, bam it goes to sleep. I press a key and then it reconnects again.

I tried everything, uninstall it, re-install it, unchecked the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under ALL devices HID, surface

keyboard interface, Bluetooth, etc etc.

This is a 100€ keyboard and it's from Microsoft, it should work on a Microsoft OS.

The fun part is that I tried on a MAC and it works flawlessly...

Would love some help.

Thanks,

MF

Hi Micael,

For us to assist you, can you confirm the following information:

  • Which Surface device are you using?
  • Have you tried to check for and install the latest update?
  • Have you also tried to use a different Surface Keyboard so we can easily isolate the issue?
  • Have you tried running the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit to check for possible software issues?

Regards.

Yes, I have the latest update.

The Surface Diagnostic Toolkit stops working immediately when opened.

No, I don't have another Surface Keyboard but as I said before, on a Mac it works perfectly, I can be 15 minutes without typing, and when I do, it starts immediately. So must be a configuration in Windows.

Hi Micael,

Thanks for getting back to us. Can you tell us the make and model of your device? For now, we suggest that you start your device in safe mode and check if you will encounter the same behavior. You may refer to this article for the steps.

Go to power settings > Edit plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings > USB selective suspend setting. Make sure this is disabled for your selected power plan.

I'm also having this problem.  It's absolutely maddening.

Surface Pro 2017 i7 with Surface Type Cover (the latest one).

Latest Windows 10 Pro, all updates done as of 7/3/18.  All firmware latest versions as of 7/3/18.

Symptoms:

When not using the keyboard, the keyboard goes into "sleep" mode after about 30 seconds.  When you go back to use the keyboard (for instance, after watching even a short video), it takes about 2 seconds to wake up.

Because the keyboard sleeps after such an incredibly short time (I've seen it go into this unresponsive sleep mode after as little as 15 seconds!), it happens *constantly*.

Where can I adjust the time period after which the keyboard sleeps like this?  I'd love to turn this "feature" off completely.  Imagine a laptop that operated this way (the keyboard turning off constantly).

Horrible design decision/bug.
