Stop Skype for Business from Starting Automatically

I made the mistake of opening skype for business once and now this gods forsaken malware won't stop launching when I log in.  I disabled it from the startup screen in the task manager and went into the options menu for skype business and unchecked both "automatically start the app when I log in to windows" and "start the app in the foreground" but it keeps doing both, and now I'm told I can't uninstall it without uninstalling my entire office suite.  Please help me get this virus off my pc.

Hi ENJenkins,

Please go to the location:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

remove Skype for Business if it is existing.

Then, open Skype for Business> drag down the setting option> go to File> Exit > restart the PC, check whether Skype for Business would startup automatically.

Just a kind reminder, as you have installed Office suite, we cannot uninstall Skype for Business separately.

If this issue persists, please drag down setting option from Skype for Business> go to Help> About Skype for Business, provide the detailed version.

Regards,

Hans

Hi Hans,

I have been experiencing this problem too in the last few weeks.

I have checked in the 'Startup' folder you have specified however Skype for Business is not in there.

I have also unchecked the check boxes in the Skype settings.

Are there any other settings in Windows which would trigger the application to start automatically?

Regards,

Ian

Hi Lan,

Thanks for the information, the issue should be fixed for this version. Please open Task Manager> Startup> disable Skype for Business from the list.

Also, please make it sure the following options have been unchecked from Skype for Business

It's unbelievable that I can't get anything to work to solve this problem.

Skype for Business is not in the startup tab of Task Manager

Skype for Business is not in the C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder

Skype for Business is not in the registry entries mentioned in previous answers to this question

(e.g. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run)

I have the two startup boxes unchecked in Tools, Options, Personal...

I have version 16.0.912.6.2109

Please, please, please help me. I hate this horrible piece of software and want to keep it from starting up everytime my computer reboots. This is insane.

Hi Barry.

For some reason, now my Skype is obeying the startup setting.

What I did was remove my password from the login panel so that, at least, it does not automatically sign in to Skype.

Then after a few days I noticed that the application would not start on startup which was great.

Then I enabled the auto sign-in again.

Hope this helps,

Ian

Hi Barry,

You may refer to Lan's suggestion to remove the credentials from Windows Credentials to give it a shot.

As I know, there is a known issue about "could not turn off auto startup for Skype for Business in Windows" and it is in the process of investigation. You may keep Skype for Business the latest version to access the fix during update in the future.

Regards,

Hans
