USB ports and High Definition Audio Contoller are not working

I having serious troubles with my Toshiba L505D laptop.  I have to recover the hard drive because every time I started up the system it would freeze upon booting; after sweeping the hard drive and installing Window 7, the problem still existed.  I took it to a computer person and he stated not only does my HD Audio Contoller not working, but all the USB port are not working either.   Tried to update the driver, but the system is not recognizing them.  Is it possible to fix the problem without replacing the motherboard, that was suggested to me?

The registry file you provide appears to be for the entire registry.

But just looking for the one portion.

Can you  open regedit and go to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

Right-click on {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} and select "Export" and save as a .reg file

Then provide that reg file via Windows Live SkyDrive.

Although the registry does not appear complete for that key I did try the key out in a  virtual installation of Window 7 and the key worked fine.

So the problem does not appear to be registry related.

Can you provide some more info on the computer?:

Start > type msinfo32 in the "Search programs and files" box and press "Enter" > File > Save > then save as an .nfo file

Then make the resulting .nfo file available via Windows Live SkyDrive

Also, can you do the following:

Start > type eventvwr in the "Search programs and files" box and press "Enter" > expand "Custom Views" and then right-click "Administrative Events" > select "Save all events in Custom View As" and save as an .evtx file

Then make the resulting .evtx file available via Windows Live SkyDrive.

Looking at the System Information confirms exactly the problems you have stated.

There does not appear to be any USB devices and sound is not working.

There appears to be an ATI sound device that cannot start,

Can you open the Device Manager and locate this device which should have a yellow mark on it.

Can you double-click the device.

Under the General tab what is the message under "Device status"?

Also, what Toshiba L505D do you have (complete model number)?

There is no yellow ? mark located on ATI device.  The message in the Device Manager for

ATI I/O Communication Processor PCI Bus Contoller: General-Device is working properly, however in Resources-This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem

ATI I/O Communication Process SMBus Controller: General-No drivers install for this device.  Tried to update the drivers, but keep getting the message "best drivers already installed......"

Model # L505D-ES5025

PN: PSLV6U-025007

Sorry also meant  to add that the only yellow ? mark is on the High Definition Audio Controller,  the device has a code 10 in the General area.

I would also like to state some other issues.  I have a web cam that doesn't work and doesn't show in the Device Manager.  Also, I no longer can use FN key to control the mouse.  When I needed the mouse to not go all over the place while typing, I could use FN F9 to make the mouse dormant, however I no longer have the option.  All these problems seem come about at the same time. I should have made you aware of this sooner, but I didn't think they were all inter-related.

Futher, just to make you aware,  besides the UBS, or Web Cam not showning up in the Device Manager, the Sound, Audio, Video Game Controller device also doesn't show in the Device Manager section.

About two months ago, I used the recovery disk to format the hard drive, back to 'Factory Out of Box" setting, but the problem still existed.  The computer would freezed on start-up, but then I when into system disable some programs, which ones I don't know, but the computer works, to the point where I can use it, however, I can't hear anything, nor use my port, or use the web cam.

it appears there is a hardware problem with the L505 series as many users are reporting similar issues as in the following thread at the Toshiba forum:

http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Audio-Sound/no-sound-usb-on-satellite-l505d-gs6000/td-p/172564

The hardware issue seems to be a solder problem with the southbridge chip as discussed here.

The southbridge chip controls USB. sound, etc.

You can try reinstalling drivers such as the Realtek high definition sound driver but ultimately to fix the problem may require a hardware fix (resoldering).

Thanks Auggy,

I kind of feared that, but good for giving it a try, I have tried reinstalling Realtek... but to no avail.  And I have notice that a great deal of Toshiba laptop owners are have the same issue with the USB and sound, so maybe Toshiba will honor its product and do some repairs.
