File Explorer search not working in Windows 10 1909

Ever since I updated to Windows 10 1909 the Search Box in the File Explorer is completely unuseable. It shows a text cursor but I cannot click inside the box or type any text into it. Essentially it's a text box with no "wiring".

Any ideas how to resolve this issue? I'm having to resort to using a third-party search app just to find files in my projects.

Kind regards

Byron

I applied this 'fix' but it did nothing for me file explorer or start menu search problem.

I just figured out that there are still multiple issues, even with KB installed.

I.e.:

1) After a while, drop-down list of quick suggestions (if matches for a given directory do exist) stops to appear, you need to restart the OS to get this working again. Basically search only launches itself if you hit the "->" square at the right side.

2) If there's an external (additional) display connected to your system, once you move the Windows Explorer to that external display, open necessary parent folder and hit in the Search field, the overlay of white rectangles appears above the Search field, and I even cannot see what I'm typing! (see attached image as an example of this).

3) Still not fixed the behavior of clear (x) icon. Expected behavior = clear the already entered search query, actual one = nothing happens at all (therefore I have to hit the "<-" icon at the navigation side of the window).

MS, please hire more decent qualified QA!

It's unbelievable to suffer from breaking such a basic feature for so long!

I think we are expecting too much too soon. First reported over 2 months ago & we have not had a patch for the patch for the patch (recurring) that seems to be the norm for updates now. Touch wood, not have had problems to the degree of other users, still would prefer the previous version that worked without problems as I wished, not as Microsoft wishes (would not be so bad if you could set criteria BEFORE searching as before). I hear that the successor to Windows 10, Microsoft will only lease Windows with an annual fee required. They will have to greatly improve the quality of releases & updates if they hope that will work.

Gave it a shot - no change here. Odd thing is my Windows Start menu search works, but when I go to "Search in File Explorer", I get the attached error and dialog...

Also - my File Explorer search just gives me a limited drop-down of potential matches when I search directly from there - no results in the primary window like before 1909; AND my Outlook email search stopped functioning at the same time. Anyone else with these symptoms? There seems to be more than than one way this bug can hit you...WHAT A ******* MESS!!!

Thanks for the info Smeed. In the meantime I'm using "Everything" (www.voidtools.com), and will continue to do so even if this ever gets fixed (no comparison). In a way this bug was a blessing in disguise because Everything is SO MUCH BETTER than Windows search EVER WAS, regardless - and I would never have thought to seek it out had this not occurred :))).

Windows search ...who?

LOL hope this helps someone.
