windows defender threats/windows update

this morning, my windows 10 PC showed lock screen, so i know there was an update done.

after logging in, a popup in notification area said windwos defender had found threats.

i clicked on it and when defender opened, it said, "no threats found".

so i checked the history--allowed and quarantined threats both showed 18 instances of "Misleading:Win32/Lodi--all dated today.

then, the "found threats" popped up again--while i was looking.  also, at the same time, scan results popup comes up showing "no threats"--and immediately after, the "threats found" comes up.

knowing that there was an update, i looked there.

i checked the history and saw that 34 feature updates failed to install (or one failed 34 times--i don't know)--these going back to january.

there were successful ones as well, yesterday included.

since this shows Win32 as location, i pointed to the windows folder and found modification date as 2/13/2018.

however, the Win32 folder showed a modification as of today--2/14/2018

upon opening the folder, several mods were found with today's date--too many to mention here.

and that stupid "threats found" just popped up AGAIN.

my computer was clear yesterday.  now all this.

what is going on?

please advise.  i have screenshots, but far too many to show here.

this is driving me nuts.

thank you.

Very strange issue you’ve encountered isn’t it?

Can you submit a copy of the file to Virus Total for analysis – see if other AV scanners see a problem? https://www.virustotal.com/

Suggest you run two or more of the following scanners: List of Malware Removal Tools

If there is no malware issue identified by other scanners then you’re possibly seeing a heuristic detection that may be a false detection.

You might want to run SFC or the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

If your only issue is with Windows Defender (WD)  you might want to install a third party AV program which should disable WD. There are a number of viable free and paid options available – take your pick…

Choosing an Anti-Virus Program

Is Windows Defender The Best For Windows 10?  Good article but ignore the ads.

But your best option might be a reset or new install of Win 10…remember you would lose any programs added since you first activated Win 10.

well, i am running avast now.  i originally used the AV provided by my ISP (TM), but it was too much of a resource hog.

i also regularly run malwarbytes and superantispyware.

all three have found nothing.

i already ran SFC, which found no problems.

just for the hell of it, i am now trying the MS safety scanner.

this was just a very weird thing--that there were almost 20 instances of that 'lodi' thing found at the same time--and also while these windows updates were failing over and over again.

ran update troubleshooter and am now trying the update process again.

will report results.

thanks for your reply.

I am getting this also. I have run scans and get updates continually, but after 24 hrs this comes back up.  Windows Defender Security Center seems to allow this and a couple of Trojan viruses to be placed on my pc. Stating no threats were detected but if I look in Quarantined threats there is that note of the virus.

I am also getting a little agitated at this continuous cycle of bad threats and then them being placed on my pc. I have spent about 48 hours trying to rid my pc of this nonsense.

I am getting these problems also. I'm loosing confidence in Microsoft and Windows. I've tried all the troubleshooters that is on their website.

Too many hours spent on eliminating this to have it show back up in 24 hours.

Well, I've not changed AV yet, but that would be a great plan.

Thanks
