I've been harping on about this game to my mates for months, now that they've finally bought it we can't play online!!!
What's the deal? Is this an Xbox, EA or Microsoft problem?

Its had its servers shut down for some time now. Its a EA game they shut servers down once a games population reachable a low level.

I've been looking this up for some time now, because my friend and I are in the same situation. EA took the servers down for the game in January of this year. This is either due to low population, which I think is not true because there are forum threads like this everywhere, or the theory of EA not being able to renew their license with New Line Cinema to keep the multiplayer aspect of the game going, which doesn't make much sense to me.
