How is my time on xbox live measured?

Sorry if there is an answer for this already out there, but I have search and not found anything. My question is, the little number that is shown on your gamercard, dispalying the number of years you have been a member for, how is this number calculated? Is it the total amount of time I have been a gold member for, not counting silver between renwals and such? Or is it the number of years that it has been since I first ever got xbox live years ago?

I am asking this because, i should be coming up to 5 years now, or at least 4 and a half, but the number displayed for me is only 3 :/

It the first way of getting the number that was mentioned if the one they use, then 3 may be correct; i should get to 4 any time soon. But if the second is true, then why am I not on 5 years already :/

Even if the first is correct, im sure i should be on at least 4, there are friends that i have had xbox live for much longer than, and their number seems to be catching up to mine. I know its no big issue, its just all very puzzling. Any answers would help.

Tenure is recorded by how many full calendar years you have been a gold member. if you had reverted to silver at any point it puts the "timer" on hold, and will continue when you purchase a new subscription. These count under full months.

Thanks alot Golgolhan, that helped alot. I just checked my subscription and renewal history, I have four 12 month membership cards that i have used here, and it says i have only used three. I checked the dates and there is a period between august 07 and dec 08 when it says i didnt have gold. I clocked to view the codes used for each 12 month renewal, and when i clicked on the dec 08 12 month renewal, 2 pre-paid codes are displayed. It is saying that i used two 12 month cards on the same day of something, when they were a year apart. Thats where this mystery year has gone.

i know this has gone pretty deep, lol. but do you have any ideas what might have happened / what i can do?
